1887 AG Spalding and Billy Sunday
Hi,
I am completing a book about Billy Sunday who played for the Chicago White Stockings from 1883-1887. We are attempting to colorize a black and white photo for the cover. I am looking for a Spalding baseball guide for 1887 that might have clues to the colors of the original uniform. A reprint will do. Anyone else have anything that could help. Thank you. CB |
Did Spalding guides back then have color images? Not sure. You can try this site.
http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/collecti...ing/index.html Earliest version is 1889 which would contain images from the 1888 teams. |

Hi,
Thanks for sending this picture of Ned Williamson. Do you know who made this card? I am looking it in a Vintage Card Catalog book and can't find anything under D. Buchner and Company. |

And we both answered at the same time when 4 hours had passed and not a single Net54er had responded to what for most of us is an easy question. :)

Thanks guys
Thanks for your help. I am not familiar with the sports card industry. I am learning.

Hi,
It looks to me the Spalding Guides started in 1878. |
|
Nice link Don. I hadn't seen this consolidated reference site before.

have you looked for any postcards - I have seen some Billy Sunday postcards in uniform in the past, they may have been later issues

I listed the starting lineup for the White Stockings of 1887 and found the Buchner Gold Coin card for each one of them. Each card had a white hat, blue uniform and brown shoes. How much would I depend on that I am not sure. It is definitely interesting and worth looking into. What do you think? Thanks Jimmy, Craig |

Just to be clear. I am doing this to identify the original color of the uniform for a picture on the cover of the book. We want to turn a black and white photo into color. Craig |
