Got the this deck of cards from a bubblegum machine in Acme Supermarket back in 69 or 70.Here are some stars.

Funny - I have had a set of these for 40 years and never realized until looking at your post that they used the Sports Illustrated (and Team Flakes) photos! Do you think they were officially licensed, or did the manufacturer just "borrow" the pictures? Is there any other example of a pre 1975 set with so many hall of famers that comes close to being as inexpensive as this set?

Since they are paper stock, I always wondered how to tell if they were original, or someone just made photo copies. Anyway, here is Lou Brock in Globe and Nabisco.

I love this set! Several years ago, I contacted SCD to update their listings as there were definitely multiple print runs. I had them catalog the Drysdale, as well as several other variations. At one time, I owned a red checkered back version of the set as well. The only one I never found (I opened more than 50 sets) is the Yaz version. I sold my binder with all of the variations to a dealer several years ago, and he told me he still has it so one of these days I will buy it back from him. I do really like this set for its affordability, and the star players present.

Looking some more, it looks like they pulled pictures and the name right from the Sports Illustrated poster ordering poster (which I have always loved!) - don't have the checklist in front of me, but were all 52 card images and captions pulled off of this two sided poster?

Alan, I always wondered what that "checkered back" version was about. I've searched for the checkered version of the 5 Cardinals to no avail. Can you elaborate a bit on those? Thanks.

Sure. They were one of the later printings, as the Ace of Spades was Harrelson. The set also had the team logos removed from most uniforms and caps. The Ace of Spades Harrelson and the lack of the team logos are the most common printing of this set (in my experience).

This set was different because the back of each card was not plain white (as normal). Instead, each back had a red and white checkerboard design on it. I believe there is also a blue and white checkerboard backed set, but I never got the chance to see it.

I got it at the Wilmington MA baseball card show in the early 2000s and sold it a few years later. If I recall correctly the dealer opened the pack to discover the red/white backs. I do not think you can tell from an unopened pack, except it might have a little red tint to it. I am waiting for the dealer to find the binder so I can buy it back from him. When that happens I will gladly provide scans.

Thanks for the info Alan. I remember plucking these sets out of the crane machines at the local and county fairs in the early 1970s. Would love to get the variation backs at some point.

Remarkably unattractive cards, but who cares. :)
