1980 Topps/Pepsi
1 Attachment(s)
The 1980 Topps/Pepsi set of 20 cards has long been one of my favorites. The most unusual card in the set is the reversed negative of Ron Guidry, so I'd like to show a photo of the Guidry card and the regular issue Topps card.
Hope you enjoy it too. Thanks, Craig |
Incredible card, Craig! Where did you get it?
|
Wow!!!!
That is the only one known to exist, correct? |
Very cool.I have never seen one before.

1980 Pepsi

What does the back of the Guidry Pepsi card look like?
|
The '80 ROY Steve Howe isn't in the set - guess he preferred Coke!
|
Thanks for sharing Craig, I've never seen one before.

Guidry
Craig,
Cool...I've never seen one like that. Z Wheat |
I always liked the combo of Pepsi and baseball on these cards. Never knew that they were distributed 25 years later until I read this thread. That's what makes this board so great, the knowledge shared...........
|
Been looking for the Lopes in this set for a while now if anyone has one they'd part with. Saw a thread on these boards from years before I joined where one was sold. Seems I was late to the dance...

Regarding my original post, the answer to your question, Bob, is that I acquired with a friend, the Pepsi set in 1981. We split the set up, and I later bought all of his cards except one.
One other piece of information is that the Lopes card (only) is unique in that the write up on the back is different than that of the issued card. Does anyone know if there were any completely printed fronts and backs on cards sold on Ebay in 2005? Here's a photo of the Lopes, no back shown because the blue on blue scheme of the write up is impossible to read. Thanks, Craig |

So these really were prototypes never issued. I knew of Burger King and Squirt cards but not Pepsi.

These prototype cards were prepared by Topps and Mike Schechter Associates for a proposed Pepsi promotion. Three sets of the cards were given to Pepsi officials for consideration, but only two were returned when the deal fell through. The third sheet was cut up and sold into the hobby. The Pepsi cards share the same format of Topps' regular 1980 issue, although Pepsi logos have been added on front and back, name and banner colors changed on front and a position circle added. In 2005, a number of individual cards were offered on eBay by Topps. 9 Ron Guidry (One known, other two cut from sheets and destroyed; negatives reversed) |

I was lucky to add these to my Cardinal collection. The Hernandez is a proof.

Very nice Randy. Bet Shane is envious

That is one of those sets that I just love the design of and assume that had they been issued though, I may have liked them less. I think a big part of that for me is that they are so rare. If they were as easy as say the 81 Coke cards, they would probably be no big deal. I feel the same was about the 68 3-D cards. I think those are the coolest 3-D cards made, but probably only because they are so tough and not commonplace like the 70s-80s sets that I see daily.
I am actually glad there is no Garvey in the set, as it would be a painful reminder of an extremely cool card I would not likely ever own. |

Thanks, Randy, for popsting photos of the two Topps Peppsi card. I was surprised when I saw them because they are different from my copies. Here's a photo of mine. Craig

Hi Craig, I need to clarify exactly what my cards are. I dug up the COAs which I haven't looked at in years.
First of all, the Simmons and Templeton cards are blank backs on the front, and blank fronts on the back. They are 4 separate cards housed in Topps Vault plastic with the Topps Vault sticker on top. The Hernandez card is a single proof blank back card from the Topps Vault. The COAs state the following: Simmons: 1980 Topps/Pepsi Acetate Overlay Proof card Templeton: 1980 Topps/Pepsi Proof Card (even though identical to the Simmons format) Hernandez: 1980 Topps Pepsi Cola Unpublished Proof card. I didn't know these existed any other way. Regards, Randy |
