Double Take
Can anyone help identify the same photos of players used in two different years. I had mentioned the 1952 Topps that used the same as 1951 Bowman. Also 1969 Topps used a cropped version of Willie Mays 1966 Topps photo...

The '69 set is replete with photographic hand-me-downs. Two that immediately come to mind are the Ernie Banks, which uses the same photo (more closely cropped) as his 1968 card, and the Larry Haney, which also uses his 1968 photo, only with the negative reversed, making him a left-handed catcher.

There are just a plethora of dupe images used by Topps, especially in the 60s ....the 65/68 Mays is another example of a HOFer Topps used dupe images on (and this image is used 3 years apart too). The 68/69 Carew is also a HOFer with a dupe image(it is cropped in 69).

51 Bowman Mantle and 52 Berk Ross

Brooks Robinson
Since I collect Brooks I know that the '63 and '64 Topps use the same exact image. Then there's the '67 and '69 Topps card that use the same image, just cropped differently. Also, if you count the Topps Super that same image is used on this issue as well. The '62 Topps card image is used for several other issues like the stamp and the Old London coin.
Oh, and keeping with the O's I know Belanger has the same image in '68 and '69. |
Is the 61 Yaz the same picture as the 60? Also, is the Rose in the 64 pic the same one in his floating head '63 rookie?
|
Yes Kevin, to both of your questions. The Yaz and Charlie Hustle shots were indeed used in consecutive years, and they both look so much better the second time around. At least Topps took the time, expense, and trouble to give us kids a brand new shot of Mickey Mantle for his regular card each year.
Good topic for serious griping, though the complaints from the pre-war guys on the re-use of the same photo for the T cards would drown us out. Don't get me started regarding what Topps did with their 60s-70s hockey---what a sham, or a shame if you prefer. ---Brian Powell |
Just about every hall of famer had a photo used twice on their base card, especially when you add 54-56. Here are some from the 60's that I found.
Banks 68 & 69 Drysdale 61 & 62 Gibson 61 & 63 Kaline 61 AS & 62 Killebrew 58 & 59 Marichal 62 & 63 small photo, again in 67 & 68 Mathews 62 & 63 small photo Mays 65 & 68 Mazeroski 60 small photo & 61 McCovey 61 & 63, 60 & 63 small photo Morgan 68 & 69 Musial 60 small photo, 62, & 63 small photo BRobinson 63 & 64 FRobinson 63 small photo & 64 Santo 62 & 63 small photo Spahn 60 & 63 small photo's Stargell 63 & 64? Wilhelm 60 & 63 small photo's BWilliams 63 small photo & 64 Yaz 60 & 61, again 63 & 64 As was mentioned the repeat photos and the late 60's cap less photos were because of the great Marvin Miller. No real excuse for the pre 1968 duplicates though. |
Aaron 68 and 69 as well.
|
While not exactly the same image, the 66 and 69 Kaline images appear to be from the same picture session.

I agree. Marichal has it beat though. His 62, 63, & 64 are all from same session. |

I just noticed that the 57 Topps Mays photo is the same as his 58 Topps All-Star card.
