Honus Wagner Elemetal 1 oz Silver Bar

Hey guys I'm buying a few myself but figured I'd share if anyone want one for their own collection.

Highland Mint, where have you gone?

vintagesportscollector 11-15-2014 08:39 PM

Seems a bit pricey for $16 worth of silver. You can get a us mint proof eagle for $50. Neat design and the cig pack is very cool, but seems like just another shiny modern collectible...but who am I to talk - I bought two of the us mint curved baseball coins.

Gary Dunaier 11-15-2014 08:59 PM

Actually, it doesn't look too bad. Not sure how the price compares to other 1-ounce silver bars, but as long as you're buying it because you like it and you're not worried about any "investment" potential, it's a cool item.

vintagetoppsguy 11-15-2014 09:48 PM

$80 for an ounce of silver?

Gee, I'll sell anyone 4 ounces at that price. Bars or rounds. Seriously, just PM me.

I have a card, a little over I gram of cardboard, that I paid $500 for. A Rodney Dangerfield board game "No Respect", a little box that says Fart Finder and inside is a plastic nose, a ton of army men I lost as a kid and bought back in my twilight years, and a little pewter dog taking a crap too. I have a thousand books I will never be able to read now. I have them and not the money I paid for them. I have guns and a bank safe full of silver. I have 474 out of 495 1958Topps in high grade PSA and one of the commons cost me over $100. This guy is getting a bargain perhaps or perhaps not but definitely getting rain on his parade for sure. I won't even mention the furniture scattered around the house from art deco, to blond, to quarter sawn oak.
Not interested yet, but if coin with an Aaron came out would have to think about it.
On to the collecting!

I just looked at the price and agree I won't be buying an ounce of silver for 80 bucks haha. But still a cool design. Wish it was cheaper

Rich Klein 11-16-2014 08:40 AM

This thread should be moved to the modern cards area.

Comparing this

to the price of an ounce of silver is similar to comparing a card to the price of the cardboard. Not exactly the same but the item has more than just strictly intrinsic value. That said the price point does seem rather hi. I however do not think it is my place to talk down on someones purchase unless advice was solicited.

I think the Wagner is pretty cool w/ its packaging and #'d to 1909
& no different then any of the silver ounce art bars & coins.

Here's 1 I found on eBay for $74.99, that's not limited in production.
I'd rather have the Wagner

I'd rather have $80.

Problem is when you go to sell it, you won't get much more than the price of an ounce of silver. It only has a premium when you want to buy it.

These were put out 10-15 years ago and may be available for close to the price of their silver from time to time. 8 oz. of silver.

About $80 for an ounce of silver.... yikes!!!

However, if they only made 100 of them and there were 500 people willing to pay $80, then I'd venture to guess it could be worth the $80 if you planned to sell it really quickly (before the hype wore off).

If there's a limitless supply of them and all orders could be filled at $80, then I kind of doubt it's worth $80 (what Barry said).

You have to figure that who ever is making these things wants to recoup the initial investment of the creating those bars. Ok, too much analysis on $80 for an ounce of silver.....

Fred 11-17-2014 11:04 AM

Luke, I'd buy one of those Wagner 8oz blocks if I could get it at near the melt weight price.

Exactly, Barry.

You walk into any coin shop, pawn shop or bullion dealer and they'll pay you just as if it were a plain ounce of silver.

Regular Pound or Troy Pound

Does it say 8 oz of silver or does it say a Troy Pound?

A Troy Pound is only 12 ounces of silver, not 16.

Fred 11-17-2014 11:18 AM

David good point. The presentation case indicates "Half-Pound Silver Proof". The guys on ebay are selling them as 8 Oz bars (".999 Fine Silver, 8 Ounce Bar"). It doesn't say "Troy" pound so maybe it is 8 Oz.

If that's the case and it really is 8 standard ounces, then that would be about 7 Troy ounces since a Troy ounce has more weight than a standard ounce.

They seem to be selling....and at list price....

I think they look nice and like the cigarette type packaging but price is too steep for me.

Peter_Spaeth 11-17-2014 08:59 PM

The Danbury Mint version.
