19th Century Cards
I don't have any 19th century cards and don't really know much about what they actually sell for. I would like to get a couple. Any ideas for a good place to start? Any chance I can get a Cap Anson card for under a grand?

You should be able to find an N28 Anson in a 1 - 1.5 type of grade for $1K or under. Or the Buchner N284 Gold Coin (Anson has 2 poses) would be under $1K for good condition.
As a newbie to 19th century, it'd be worth a short-term subscription to VCP to see actual sales prices on various cards from the era, so you can learn what to expect to pay. You'll save a heck of a lot more than the few bucks it costs for VCP access, if you know what to pay for purchases! |
Thanks for the advice, I will check that site out. I really like his N162 Card but they're asking 2500 in PSA Authentic for the couple that are on ebay. Is that really what those sell for?

Another option
N184 1887 Kimballs Champions
This is a neat series from 1887 with about five baseball players in its group. Also includes some multisport legends like Annie Oakley. Could be a different set that would interest you. |
always liked these.

1887 Tobin Litho color / b&w trade cards
(from Google images - not my cards) |
Though clearly cartoonish, the color Tobin Lithos are nice person because the color lithography is sharp and colorful. 19th century chomolithography is good stuff.
You can get a Tobin Anson for well under $1,000. |
Thanks everyone, I didn't realize how many different cards were made before 1900. I think it would be cool to have a few cards that are that old and have survived in decent shape. Any recommendations on where to buy them other than here or ebay?

COMC has a decent selection
And good quality front and back scans. The prices aren't great for some, but you can make offers to the sellers.

Thanks I hadn't even heard of that site.
