Grange and Nagurski sell in recent auction

Can anyone tell me more about this Grange card: http://www.goodwinandco.com/Extremel...-LOT28586.aspx please?

I don't recognize the designation. It's not a Shotwell right? Any opinions as to whether it sold high or low? Thanks.

The Nagurski seems like it went a bit high, but the pencil writing isn't that bad and they don't come around all the time. I'd be happy if I sold it for that price - hopefully buyer is happy too: http://www.goodwinandco.com/1935-Nat...-LOT28587.aspx

The Grange is a strip card from a multi-sport set. It's potentially his true rookie card but no one is certain whether these strips were produced before his Spalding or Shotwell cards or not.

Thanks Jeff. What does "strip card" mean? How were they distributed? Who manufactured them?

jefferyepayne 11-03-2014 07:16 PM

Adam, calling Adam.....

I believe strip cards were cards distributed in a long, single strip containing multiple cards that are often found cut apart into single cards (like the one you are showing). I think they were distributed by stores as giveaways and/or promotions but am not certain of this. They were popular in the 1910s and 1920s.

Thanks Jeff - that helps a lot. Lot to learn in this hobby :)

The actual photo looks a lot like "The Famous Smile" Shotwell....

It's the same image. For anyone that's interested, I have one of these available for sale. PSA misclassified it as a W590 strip card instead of W580 but that's what it is. They also wouldn't give it a number grade (like SGC did) because it's hand cut.

Total Pop of this card is 3 across PSA and SGC. Extremely rare item.

Jeff & John- It has always been my understanding that most/many strip cards were a product of the old penny scales that were on most streets across the country.

As a young boy back in the 1950s and 60s they were on our downtown streets, put a penny in, the scale would move and out would pop a photo of an actor or your fortune?

Please don't take this as gospel but back in the 1970s in the hobby publications this was discussed quite often.

W590 is a miscellaneous subject set that was issued in sheets. Here is a picture of a full sheet from another post:

There were two printings, 1925 and 1931. There are variations/new cards on the 1931 sheets that help pin down the timing.

Thanks Adam. Was W580 produced the same way at the same time? There seems to be confusion as to whether this Grange is a W580 or W590. SGC has it as W580 and PSA has it as W590.

Thanks for all the contributions - this turned out to be a really good thread.

Jeff, somehow I'm not surprised you have one :). If this thread proves its a 1925, are you going to keep it?

Mike, awesome info on the "penny scales" - I never heard of this - sounds like something I should've learned from Pawn Stars/Antiques Roadshow etc.

Well, actually, this one is my double :)

I was wondering why you were selling..... Jeff, could you post an image of your main card? That would give us images of all 3 of the graded cards in one thread, right?

Well, not exactly. My other one is not graded.

The Nag actually was very nice eye appeal, people will pay a premium for that and so do I. I actually placed a bid on that one myself, i was expecting closer to 3k at the hammer. It is the white whale of football.

TanksAndSpartans 11-08-2014 05:44 PM

Jeff, I like that Grange - I see why you're keeping that one.

Chris, I agree, the Nags has good eye appeal, very clean and nicer than the PSA 3 on eBay right now (not so clean), but at that price, for me at the end of the day, the mark is a 2 grade deduction and also a bit distracting to see pencil on the jersey, I still think it went high - I think you dropped out at the right time. If your looking for a Nags, you could check with Jeff to see if his is available....

jefferyepayne 11-09-2014 05:47 AM

I personally believe the Chicle Nags is going to continue to climb and climb. It's the T206 Honus Wagner of football: a star player in a very popular pre-war set that is a short print. Perfect storm!

Unfortunately no doubles of this card to sell. I had three but sold both extras to collectors. But keep looking because with the recent sale of 10 of them in an auction, there's more supply out there than there has been in years.

Thanks for checking guys- I'll try save up more $. Been looking for a nice 1-2 grade at best, since i am just collecting rookie cards, more on the baseball side tho.
I did my Mantle run, and decided and trying to sell most of them off to acquire my new path of R/C, which is more exciting to me and get more joy when my brother sees them.
still a nice centered Jim Brown r/c is on my bucket list (as for football)
