Let's see some football cards!
1 Attachment(s)
I went to the bank today to move the contents of one of my safety deposit boxes to a bigger box. I moved the one that had my football cards in it. There they were 65 Joe Namath, 76 Walter Payton and the rest of the guys. I also found the triplets.
Help me relive my football collecting childhood by posting any card you want. I chased all sets up to about 1982. I'd love to see your favorites or whatever you have. |
Well, since I don't have anything new, to speak of, to ad to the "new acquisitions" thread, here are some things from my collection I like. Not the most expensive items, but a little off the beaten path.
Purple and blue sky versions of 1963 Johnny Unitas. 63's are by far my favorite football set from the 1960's. http://i1309.photobucket.com/albums/...psc92e0204.jpg 1959 Bell Brand Rams still sealed in cellophane. For the Rams collectors, like myself, the BB's are the holy grail to collect. Interestingly, even as expensive as they tend to get I still run across dealers, even ones who specialize in vintage cards, who have no idea of their existence. http://i1309.photobucket.com/albums/...psb797a03f.jpg http://i1309.photobucket.com/albums/...psecb3083c.jpg Finally, when you think about football matchcovers, the first thing that comes to mind are either the Diamond Match covers from the 1930's, or the Redskins covers from the 1940's-60's. I found these 2 1950 Lions covers on ebay a number of years ago and didn't realize that they represent a set of 2, at lest that is what I have been told. If others exist I'd love to know. http://i1309.photobucket.com/albums/...pscd503472.jpg |
Nice group of Brown RC's. The centering on that last one is awesome!
|
1960 Topps #72 Charley Conerly. Started at Ole Miss in 1942 but left to serve as a Marine in the South Pacific during WWII. NFL ROY 1948 and NFL MVP 1959. After his playing career he portrayed the "Marlboro Man" in commercials. Died in 1996.

Going through my 1961 Topps cards I found #72 Mike McCormack autographed! NFL player 54-62 and a Cleveland offensive tackle during the Jim Brown era. Power and great intelligence. Head coach Baltimore 198o and 81, Seahawks 1982. President and GM panthers 93-97. Died in 2013.
<a href="http://s176.photobucket.com/user/larrytipton/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image-10.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w185/larrytipton/Mobile%20Uploads/image-10.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo image-10.jpg"/></a> |
1962 Topps #140 John David Crow Heisman Trophy winner 1957 Texas A&M has a street named after him adjacent to Kyle Field. NFL 1958-1968.
<a href="http://s176.photobucket.com/user/larrytipton/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image-21.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w185/larrytipton/Mobile%20Uploads/image-21.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo image-21.jpg"/></a> |
1963 Topps #38 Zeke Bratkowski played in the NFL 14 years. Signed by Vince Lombardi off the waiver wire for $100 to become the super sub to Bart Starr. Elected to the Packers HOF in 1989. I picked this card because Zekes left hand looks really weird in this picture.

Thanks Richard. The 63 Unitas and Brown were the only ones from that set that I didn't come across as a kid. I never seen a Bell Brand card either.
Larry thanks for sharing that info on Conerly it was very interesting. Here's my favorite Jim Brown card. |
1964 Topps #151 Bo Roberson has an oversize helmet covering his left foot. Had a 7 year NFL career and had an Ivy League degree, a Ph.D., and an Olympic medal (long jump silver Rome 1960) died in 2001.
<a href="http://s176.photobucket.com/user/larrytipton/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image-14.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w185/larrytipton/Mobile%20Uploads/image-14.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo image-14.jpg"/></a> |
1965 Topps #52 Goose Gonsoulin got into a fight once when a teammate stole his helmet (just kidding). The original Bronco selected first in 1960. Started 61 NFL games in a row and his 11 interceptions in 1960 is still a Bronco record? Wow he just passed away 9/8/14.
<a href="http://s176.photobucket.com/user/larrytipton/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image-15.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w185/larrytipton/Mobile%20Uploads/image-15.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo image-15.jpg"/></a> |
1966 Topps #15 Why Topps Why?
<a href="http://s176.photobucket.com/user/larrytipton/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image-16.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w185/larrytipton/Mobile%20Uploads/image-16.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo image-16.jpg"/></a> |
1967 Topps #116 Ben Davidson ( nice moustache ) didn't play High School football because of his height 6'8" and had a ten year NFL career. Involved in a bench clearing brawl vs KC Chiefs in 1970 when he speared Len Dawson while Dawson was on the ground. Did TV and commercial work after his NFL days, and passed in 2012 prostate cancer.
<a href="http://s176.photobucket.com/user/larrytipton/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image-17.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w185/larrytipton/Mobile%20Uploads/image-17.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo image-17.jpg"/></a> |
Larry, great stuff! I agree, "WHY?" about the funny ring checklist. I also like the taped name on Gooses helmet, must have been a training camp picture.
Here is another 1963 purple/blue sky pair of Bernie Casey. After a successful 7-year football career, including a pro-bowl nomination, Bernie began a successful acting career. He played in such films as "Sharkey's Machine", "Never Say Never Again", "Spies Like Us" and "Revenge of the Nerds", along with numerous other films. http://i1309.photobucket.com/albums/...psd7c8aca9.jpg |
1968 Topps #19 Keith Lincoln. A nice picture of Keith but I like this card because of the stadium in the background. It appears to be Buffalo War Memorial Stadium and there are some cool images on google. It was demolished in 1987 and even hosted a NASCAR race in 1958. Back to Keith. He had an eight year AFL career selected AFL All-American five times. Caught a 91yard TD in 1961 and he ran back a 103 yard kickoff for a TD in 1962. War Memorial Stadium looked awesome and Keith wasn't to bad his-self.

Love Davidson's mustache pre Rollie Fingers. Piccolo looked like a bad ass and those 51's are in great shape.
Larry I don't recall where I got all three Browns. I do remember most dealers practically gave football cards away. |
ks - I remember a particular card dealer back in SoCal, probably early 80's, who didn't deal with football, only baseball. He would, however, get quite a lot of football in collections he bought. When he accumulated enough he would just load it up into shoe boxes and sell them by the box full, regardless of year. There's no telling what treasures were in those boxes. Too bad I wasn't collecting football at that time.

Great stuff, guys! Lots of great football out to discover if you haven't yet wandered far from Topps, Bowman, etc. Here are examples of some hard to complete sets. How many can you name?
From the 1920's http://photos.imageevent.com/ltsgall...pottsville.jpg From the 1930's http://photos.imageevent.com/ltsgall...35Wheaties.jpg From the 1940's http://photos.imageevent.com/ltsgall...40418_0004.jpg From the 1950's http://photos.imageevent.com/ltsgall...e/scan0045.jpg From the 1960's http://photos.imageevent.com/ltsgall...ze/Dawson.jpeg http://photos.imageevent.com/ltsgall...e/scan0004.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/ltsgall...40528_0068.jpg From the 1970's http://photos.imageevent.com/ltsgall...ize/karras.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/ltsgall...40715_0001.jpg jeff |

From the 1930's Wheaties? From the 1940's no clue From the 1950's I see Remars bread talked about on the non sports side so this is a guess included with a loaf of Remars bread? no clue for any of the cards from the '60s or '70s Larry |
JP - Those are fabulous! I love oddball and regional issues, although I have very few
Here is another, probably more commonly seen, cereal issue. I recently found the Norm Standlee card to finish the football set of 5 (minus the reverse negative Trippi). http://i1309.photobucket.com/albums/...ps94306f75.jpg |

1) Looks like a post-card issue of some type. Got me! 2) 1935 Wheaties Fancy Frames Ernie Nevers 3) 1948-50 Safe-T-Card (Redskins) Slingin' Sammy Baugh 4) 1950-51 Bread for Energy/Bread for Health Labels Otto Graham (Those are TOUGH!) 5) 1963 Fairmont Dairy (Chiefs) Len Dawson (Been looking for one of those; BRUTALLY tough!) 6) 1966 or 1967 Williams Portraits Paul Hornung. (I'm going to guess it's the '66 when they did just Packers) 7) 1966 Royal Castle (Dolphins) Howard Twilley 8) ??? Alex Karras. HELP!!!! I have one on the large Tasco prints of former Lion Wayne Rasmussen (who is my neighbor and his grandson and my son are friends, teammates, etc. at the same school) and the artwork is very similar, but this looks like a bookmark or something. You got me! 9) 1970 Carlson-Frink Dairy (Broncos) Coaches Whitey Dovell (I've never seen one - looking for Rutigliano) |
Quote:
Very good guesses, Ty! You hit all of the ones you took a shot at. I don't have the color Carlson-Frink of Rutigliano that came from a dairy carton but do have the premium. The color one would look similar. http://photos.imageevent.com/ltsgall...40625_0001.jpg jeff |

Sorry Clint but that's the only Tittle I have!
Here are 5 more of the '50's, w/ a couple of the "keys": |
Fred those are some very nice looking 1950 Bowmans. I actually purchased my first 50's Bowman from you a while back (C. Trippi). I have been looking at both the Tittle and Otto Graham and as soon as I find the right one I am going to make purchase. I have been on Quarterback buying frenzy lately. Here is my latest.

I remember the Trippi purchase--Wish I had a nice Tittle or Graham available but I don't! That Starr is a beauty tho! I'm going to look in my few '50 Bowman dups to see if I have a QB but it won't be one of the HOFers! |

My Favorite Philadelphia Jim Parker. Looks like he's going to eat someone for lunch. Also a 1929 press photo (because there is no card of him) of Gus Sonnenberg in uniform as a Providence Steamroller.

Here's another Gus Sonnenberg with his NFL Championship team. http://photos.imageevent.com/ltsgall...40316_0004.jpg jeff |

Working on a FB HOF card only auto set. Completed my Heisman signed card set (all college uniforms). These are some of my favorites. The Hein is personalized to me, this card may very well have been signed to me as a kid and sold by my dad when he sold his collection. Pretty cool if it made it's way back to me some 40 years later!
|
Those autograph cards rock, Tony! I particularly love the Mel Hein story as I'm working on an autographed set of the 1955 All-Americans. Here are a few of the ones I have:
