interesting/funniest description on Back of Card
 

Whats the best/interesting/funniest description you ever seen on the back of a baseball card.

I know there was 1952's topps card that said the player worked as a gas station attendant in the off season that i thought would be unusual to put on the back of a card..


i wonder if that guy was member of the gas house gang..

Dal Maxvill was an electrical engineer and worked as one in the off season. That was on one of his cards.

1964 Topps Dave Bennett rookie (Phillies) card: "this 19 year old fire-baller is just 18 years old).

I am going with the 1970 Pedro Borbon.

The 1954 Paul Minner I just won in the raffle says that Paul declined to fight a batter last season to protect his new $200.00 set of teeth!

Memorex or Photoshop? I guess from my childhood, I liked some of the ones in Topps Big Baseball, but can't remember any specific one.

My favorite is from the 1941 Play Ball card of Harry "Gunboat" Gumpert. It says: "harry did not set the baseball world on fire last year. At times he wasn't very good....."

Holy crap, I can't believe a card maker would really write that. The poor guy's family must have been so excited about his being on a card...until they read the back. Sy Berger once said in an interview that the hardest part of his job was trying to find something nice to say about a lousy player for a card back: "What can you say -- 'This guy stinks'?" Apparently, at Gum, Inc., the answer was "yes." I can't see that on the back of my Gumpert card; it has this instead:

Here's a funny bio on Lou Brock's 67 Topps, proclaiming his defensive prowess.

While Lou came up in 62 as a CF, and played mostly RF in 63, in 1964 and 65 and 66 he was almost exclusively in left field. And I don't ever recall him being considered an outstanding thrower or defensive wizard.

Am I wrong on this?

The 1976 Laughlin tribute to the Indianapolis Clowns has a number of great backs (and fronts). This is far and away my favorite, due in great part to sharing the same name. If you have an extra copy, I am always buying this card.

This has to be one of Robert Crumb's contributions
durring his time with TOPPS .... great card , wonder
if it gets special notation when graded .

Too early-Crumb was there in '65

I think O'Toole's tool might have been done by Irwin Hasen, who did the 54 and 55 cards at least, possibly more.

You may be right toppcat .
As far as I've been able to find out ,
Crumb didn't work at topps till 1965 .
