A bit of trivia: Skier's thumb used to be called 'gamekeeper's thumb'. When the members of a large estate, castle, etc.. would go game hunting they would bring along a gamekeeper to deal with the animals both live and dead. They would use their thumb to press on the neck of the small animal to make sure they were dead. A number of the gamekeepers ended up having this injury, which is now known as skier's thumb.

That's what the doctor told me. He said this happened when the gamekeepers snapped the necks of chickens. When the chickens cocked their heads back the gamekeeper would have this injury.
