52 mantle

I'm pretty serious about obtaining a low grade with dazzling eye appeal. PSA would be best. Not sure what these run today. Perhaps 2,3,or4. Thanks
Chris

A 4 in Goodwin with a week to go is at 17K with the vig, just to give you an idea.

Unfortunately you are a bit late to the dance with your quoted prices. A PSA 1 with "dazzling eye appeal" nowadays can set you back north of $5000. I assume dazzling eye appeal means centered, complete, bright colors still apparent, but lots of creases. For $2000 you might get half a card (no kidding), or pieces missing, severely off center, holes, major paper loss on front and/or back etc. And any jumps above PSA 1, even .5 of a grade will quickly cost you thousands. PSA 2 centered with nice looks can grow towards $8-$10K. PSA 3 to $15K and as you have seen once a PSA 4 and it becomes $20Kish. Keep looking though and be patient, you might be able to save a bit if you dig. Good luck!

Some recent prices, asks, sales for examples that have standout eye appeal for their grade...

Tony Arnold (Tonyetrade on ebay) has a gorgeous PSA 1.5 that will cost at least 11k. Already spoke to him about price.

Jeff Foy (card country) is another great seller who has a fantastic PSA 2 that he's also not letting go for less than that. That card is visible on his Collector Focus gallery.

There's an otherwise stunning for the grade PSA 1(or was it an Auth) with a hole punched through it that the seller won't move for less than 10k (I tried, to no avail, LOL).

There's a stunning, centered PSA 6 that is about to sell for 50k. Last I heard the card was moving and the seller was not budging, nor was an offer of 45k tantalizing.

And a pretty well centered SGC 80 just changed hands at a whopping 50k.

The last two strong PSA 3s I know of went for 14.4k and 15.5k.

I have scans of most of these cards so if you want to see them and gauge let me know; the pics are on my phone.

I had a beautiful looking PSA 5 Mantle Rookie---I sold it 4 months ago to a friend---He is not a big collector, but wanted a good investment---I believe he would sell it in the range of $28k---I will include a scan---let me know what you guys think of the card and price. thanks, Don

Sorry "Junk", I may have misinterpreted your original post. You said, "PSA would be best. Not sure what these run today. Perhaps 2,3,or4."

I read it as you guessing what they "run for today", "2, 3, or 4K...."

I responded that your guess was a bit low. I now see that perhaps you were referring to PSA grades you are wanting. So sorry about that.

Bestdj777 09-19-2014 05:54 AM

Don, that is a beautiful card.

Junk, I agree with Matt and others sentiments. There has been a huge uptick in pricing on low grade 52 Mantles over the last couple of years. When I purchased my first (I believe it was four years ago), you could get a terrible beater in the $2,000-3,000 range. There was an example with the letters "PE" in pen on the front that I believe changed hands for around $2800. I wish I could have gone back and picked that up but at the time the ink was a turn off.

Just last year, I start shopping again for another low grade Mantle and picked up the other variation. At that time, the beaters I had seen for sale three years ago were now $3000 plus cards. Anything that was not shredded was a $4000 card and people would not let go of anything really decent looking for less than $5000. I ended up picking up an "Authentic" example for a decent price as that was the best eye appeal I could find for the money. That was still a pretty pricey card though.

I am on the same quest but am trying to be realistic and stay in the PSA 1-1.5 range. Most look like dog meat. When they don't look like dog meat, the seller wants premium money. Low grade #311's have been surging. A PSA Auth that had serious eye appeal (front was a 7 all day) went for north of $14k recently if I'm not mistaken.

I've seen a few sit on the market at high asks but again, these are diamond cut, creased and have no corners left.

i think you never know what a good psa 5 can bring in..but i think 28k is at the absolute highest due to centering....plus i dont think a direct sale would be 28k that woudl be auction so seller would clear 25k or less..

i know i would pay 25k direct for a greatly centered psa 5..mantle.

Peter_Spaeth 09-19-2014 08:40 AM

A greatly centered 5 is going to get a lot more than 25 in today's market. Maybe not tomorrow's, we'll see if the spike holds.

If you want to collect for investment then I guess PSA would be the way to go. If you collect THE CARD then anything graded by SGC is superior to PSA. IMO

pawpawdiv9 09-19-2014 11:44 AM

i bought mine (my avatar) back in 2013 and i had offers that were tempting, but its a true pleasure to own a pinnacle card. Prices have almost doubled from back then. I been looking for the 'A' variation afterwards, and theres no way i can afford the current market for one, unless you just wait and save for the right moment.

I just bid and I'm currently winning. Next bid would be a minimum of 20,551 to knock me out. What are my chances that I win this card?

50-50 I would say.
I am glad I bought mine when I did, just a few months ago. Yikes.

I kick myself for not pulling the trigger on a PSA auth with nice eye appeal. Lost it by $100. Was under 4k. Low grades are definitely jumping.

Well junkdrawer, you're out of luck, it's now at 20k plus.

One is O/C and the other is nicely centered.

Stick with it, man, and be patient. With some time and effort (and some dough) you'll get your Mick!
