That's really cool. I never knew those were from Lowell.
So I did a bit of looking and found a couple interesting things. The company moved to Lowell around 1907 from Boston, 463-467 commercial street. The building is gone, or modernized so much it's not recognizable. The current building is part of the coast guard base. The local paper on Nov 2 1910 was reporting that the creditors and bondholders of the company had met at the plant in Lowell to figure out if the company had the ability to pay it's bills. Apparently not, and one was appointed to look after the interests if the stakeholders. On another interesting note, they were big in printing boxes and did work for "the sugar trust, from candy companies and the tobacco trust, and other concerns of similar kind" The tobacco trust of course was ATC, and the orange borders share a few poses with another more well known set. Hmmmm...........I wonder what I can turn up in the local historical society. Most likely nothing related, as their specialty was boxes especially novelty candy boxes for which they had several patents. Steve B |

I find it amazing as to how long no one knew where the "1910 W-UNC Orange Borders" cards came from. And also amazing how few full boxes remain in existence.

I never tire of seeing that Cobb, Jeff. All things considered that one is a beauty. One of the main things that keeps me going is finding out what we don't know about our cards, there is so much. The Blanke Wenneker - Nadja connection was a big deal a few years ago. Here is another box, now if I can find J=k and Baseball Bats boxes I will be most of the way there (wherever "there" is).

IMHO, those 1911 Baseball Bats cards that have the red backgrounds and orange borders, such as this WaJo and Steve's Matty seen above, are the most striking of all the box cards.

Baseball Bats and especially the Orange Border cards have always been a favorite. I really like the photo selection in the Orange Border set, and if the card includes the Orange Border, the more attractive the overall image is to me. The fact that the photos used are not encountered often in other sets is a plus, and that when one comes available to view it is like you just discovered the joy of collecting all over again. Thanks for all the picture posts so far.

Here are a few of mine. Ive sold most of the Orange Borders in that scan but I still have the Joss.... The Cobb and J=K Wagner are amongst my very favorite cards

Brian I think that Cobb is part of an ad sheet not a box. I have a Jeffries from the same issue with back advertising for a candy co.

Thanks for the info Adam. I'm honestly not sure what it's from. If you look closely on the borders, you can see bits of red sticking out. That and the paper stock led me to believe it was cut off of a box.
Curious about the Jeffries you mentioned....would you mind shooting me a scan or sharing it here? Thanks much! |

And yes, Lowell is much better than it was. Somewhere there's an article comparing Lowell to Lawrence. Two cities that are near each other and nearly identical in some ways. But that took very different paths. I still need to get over to the historical society to see if they have anything. It's very hit and miss, some stuff they have lots of info, others it's just the listing in the city guides from the early 1900's. There's a book about early baseball in Lowell. I picked up a copy but haven't read it yet. Steve B |

I knew about the Goudey place, I think National Chicle is still standing? And Delong. Haven't looked for US Caramel.
The George C Miller location I think went to the Mass Pike. Either that or was removed around then and some new place built. The closest I can find for the address is a tiny houselike building. That just doesn't seem right unless the office was in a house and the warehouse was somewhere else. Or maybe they had someone else print and distribute- There were a lot of gum/candy places in town doing cards. I always imagine a print shop salesman having a really good year selling the idea of cards to just about every place in town. :) Steve B |
The closest guess I can find so far for where PR warren was located in Lowell is currently the textile history museum. I'll have to find a better source than what's online. The machine shop companies that had buildings they moved to occupied a huge stretch of Dutton street, everything from about the current Fletcher street to broadway and from Dutton to the canal behind it. So either the museum, the big building next door or the now parking lots out back.
