Sets PSA will no longer authenticate/grade
Noticed that the 1928 Fro-Joy Babe Ruth set is now in the "(No Longer Grade)" category by PSA along with the 1928 G. Ruth Candy Co. card set. Who does grade these cards, and why would PSA stop? Too many fakes that they can't accurately tell apart?
Which set that you collect/collected do TPG services no longer touch with a 10-foot-pole? |
After using the PSA search engine, here are some other sets they don't grade:
1973 Mattel Instant Replay Records (N9 -No Longer Grade) - boxers 1977 HRT/RES - Looks like a set that reprinted old Bowmans 1967 Starliner Decal - Baseball 1992 Pro File National - Baseball from the National Convention None of these have many graded examples, and none seem to have the cachet of either Babe Ruth set. They seem like outliers. |
I dont necessarily collect these
but PSA also does not grade anymore : Football Exhibits, Exhibits Champions 1948, 1982 TCMA Elway Minor League card, Star Basketball, Legends Magazine cards, "Broders", I know there are more these just popped into my head. I also know there was a time SGC did not grade redman indians I do not know if that policy is still in effect or not.

BVG grades Fro-Joys. I believe PSA stopped grading Fro-Joys for a couple of reasons: they had let a lot of bad ones slip through because of their lack of experience on these cards and secondly they probably were receiving 90% bad ones for grading and this would upset customers when they spent money for grading and the cards would come back fake. I have the whole set graded 1(PSA) and (5) BVG. If you have a real one and a fake in your hands it is easy to identify the fakes from the real ones IMO.

jerry...is that one real?

My understanding is that 1928 Flo-joy cards were not made in color.

Uncut color Flo-Joy sheets are real 1970s reprints. What's to learn? A steal is more than likely in the opposite direction.
|
PSA also won't grade exhibit boxing cards. Too bad; some of the boxer registry listings are laughably incomplete.

Buying a fro joy sheet
Unseen. You have about as much chance of buying a used lottery ticket that's a winner. It's not something to waste your time on with the overwhelming number of counterfeits of this particular issue.

Baseball Exhibits next? Are boxing and football just too easily reprinted?
|
Would you buy a Babe Ruth Candy Co. card at going rate? I've almost done so recently and both times I dropped out early due to the "fake" stigma. You?
