Tom, PM sent about Tinker on shoulder.

My first 7 cards arrived today. Gorgeous cards, and fast delivery. Thank you!

Tom's great to do business with, everybody. Jump in on some of these cards. It's so nice seeing them au natural, and not stuck behind a thick plastic prison.

clipped corners

Tom,

I was curious if you knew the back story about how many of your cards got their lower-left corner clipped? (I'm especially curious, as I am now the proud owner of your clipped-corner Coles!)

They sure are stunning otherwise!

Just a guess

My theory is that it is an original collector thing. All of the clipped corner cards from the near set I purchased were Piedmont 350 backs. Now, that is the most common one out there, but when you have some 290 of them in a single group and every one has that back, I have to assume that they came from the same source, and that that source got them from the same source. My assumption is that the original collector got them all from someone (or he himself) who was buying the Piedmont brand at the time that the 350's were in them. Said collector then clipped them to show they were his (as opposed to back stamping them) and there you have it.

That's my theory anyway.

Tom,

Some of the cards I got from you with clipped corners have Piedmont 150, Sweet Caporal 150, and Piedmont 350-460 Fac 25 backs. I just love that the images are still crisp and clear with the paper being super white compared to others!

Well then that throws a bunch of my theory all to s%#$ doesn't it?

Still assume it is the original collector who did this instead of the back stamp. And yes, they are for the most part incredibly clean cards aside from the five sharp corners.

Tom,

I got the 6 portraits today in the mail. Love them!

Tom is a great guy to deal with!

They look like they might have been placed in some sort of album with the little corner holders (like in old picture albums). Maybe the original owner glued the bottom left corner to keep them in place and whoever got the cards just used a razor to free them rather than try to get them out undamaged. Just a thought! :)

BicycleSpokes 09-12-2014 01:38 PM

Tom,
Thanks for offering your theory! I was most curious if the injuries were sustained recently, or (as it seems) date to further back.
Cheers, David
