Buy a '52 Robinson or Pafko?
Hey All,
I've got another conundrum over a purchase option, for an auction coming later this year. I've got a choice between the '52 Topps Robinson or Pafko black back. Both are PSA 6. The Pafko at that level is far, far tougher to buy, but the card isn't as well centered as the Robinson. The Robinson card is hot right now, which could be a good or bad thing, depending on if I'm buying at a high, or if the card is still ascending. The Pafko card is felt by some to be overpriced, but at the PSA 6 level it seems to be a whole different ball game, with only 20 black backs graded at that level and 16 higher, while there are 60 redbacks in PSA 6 with 42 grading higher. Plenty of Robinsons come up for sale, but I only see on PSA 6 Pafkos a year. Do you go for the classic star player who is well centered, or the slight off centered common player who is far, far, far tougher to get in the same grade? Which would you go for? |
I would go for the Robinson.I always liked that card.

Can a Mod move my thread?
Sorry I just realized I posted this thread in the wrong forum. Obviously it belongs in the Pre 1980 post war forum.
Would a moderator be able to move my thread to the appropriate forum? |
Go for the Robinson!

The 1952 Topps Robinson is one of my absolute favourite cards (of any set, generation, etc). I used to own one in a lower grade (a 2, I think) and regret getting rid of it.
So for me, this is easy. Robinson. Admittedly, it would be a tougher decision if I saw scans, and the Pafko was well centered (though I do believe that card is overpriced). Cheers, Richard. |
The Robinson without thinking twice

For me it's Robinson and it's not even a nanosecond-long decision. One is centered and of an icon. The other specimen seems to only be desirable due to the grade sticker. The Robinson has demand from both set and player collectors, in addition to guys like me who just collect great singles of great players. In stark contrast, the Pafko is primarily desired by those building that set, albeit a beloved, watershed set.

Pafko or Robinson
It is not just a question of Pako or Robinson, it is also a question of, if one, which one :)
