Might be the funniest thread I have seen on the board in quite some time. I love it. BTW, I can only help customers on odd numbered days :).

But seriously we will have a number system at our booth. When you walk up you just take a number and eventually we will call you up so you can spend your money. We have found it the most efficient way, other than the odd number days thingy. Scott and I aim to please.

Perhaps the vagueness was intended to reduce overcrowding at the booth, which obviously has been a problem given the need for a policy of one customer at a time.

Steve_NY 07-22-2014 12:56 PM

Sorry for being so vague. All I was trying to say was that stopping by my booth might be a good idea as I am so diversified and carry a little or a lot of everything. It can't hurt to have a peak. Also, we can get very busy at times, and we don't want anyone to get insulted. Steve

Leon, btw, I prefer the honor system, and find a number system "like a bakery" too funny at essentially a card show.

BTW, I also did not intend to insult anyone regarding our "one at a time per person" policy. But those that really get insulted are often the ones you have that policy to protect against. We all need to do little things to ensure that we are comfortable and are not the next victims.

Before you all pile on, he sets up showcases; however will not hand out more than one stack of cards at a time.

I have the same policy.

Shoot, if I don't know you I typically won't hand you more than one card.

Sean

timn1 07-22-2014 08:14 PM

OK...

Shoot, since I don't know you, Sean, I guess I won't be buyin' more than one from you-- (or even one) :D

Seriously, I know theft is a concern but I don't see why a seller would say something that is going to alienate any potential customers, especially on a site like this one where most folks are serious collectors...

Shoot, shoot. Shoot! Shoot? Shoot......

On a serious note -

I don't think what he MEANT should alienate customers, how it was said is what may do it.

Last national I stopped four people I saw handed a stack of cards and start walking off and/or take a few from the stack and put them in their pockets...

Steve_NY 07-22-2014 08:51 PM

Tim, I have already said that I was sorry for insulting anyone, even if you are not a potential customer. I am always willing to talk to anyone while helping another customer; I just won't take anything else out of the showcases at the same time.

I was just trying to avoid what happened to me previously. A Net54 customer came to my table at a very busy time; we had traded e-mails first. I was helping someone else and he said he would be back. But since he didn't stick around for 5 more minutes, he kept coming back to find me busy.

Eventually we connected, and he immediately set off my alarms by looking through a pile of 60+ cards that were all $300 to $600 each, and started putting them into 6 different buckets. It freaked me out as they were all in series order already. He was also putting all of the most expensive cards at the bottom of the piles. Now doesn't that set off your alarms? Maybe it was my imagination, but imagine what could have happened if I was helping three people at the same time?

*****For all of those who will certainly get insulted*** This example was a real life example that happened to me and it is not to say that anyone else will do the same thing. It's just what it is, so please do not jump on me for that too.

Ask anyone who has bought from me. No matter whether you ask for it or not, I typically give everyone a 15-20% discount on most sales. Stop by and say hello.

By the way, Sean, thanks for your input above.

Best,

Steve

Will you be selling chocolate babka, or if not, maybe a lesser babka?

You caught someone or more than one actually stealing and putting the cards in their pocket. What happened when you turned them in?

timn1 07-23-2014 08:47 PM

As my Australian friends say,

No worries, guys-

everybody has his (or her) own style of dealing with the public (some members of which are toadstools, obviously) -

here's wishing all dealers and collectors a great National -

Tim
