What's Hot, What's Not, July 2014 Edition

Always fun to do this--if you go beyond "what I own is hot." Or lamenting that what you own is "not." Of course, we all know CJ 14s remain hotter than hot, but beyond that, what over the past few months? And what's cold in summer of 2014? T206 "Ex" for all HOFers were surging all spring but now have leveled off, though hardly cold. CJ 15s are now gaining. What else?

Babe Ruths. Especially early ones. I can kick myself for selling what I had when I had them....

Hi Greg,

It is your thread, but can I suggest you indicate "hot" since when?

Some board members will think T206 backs are hot because 6 years ago the prices were way lower (yet over that timeframe the folks who track this almost daily would say there have been many hot and cold periods over those years).

Others who are very active buyers/sellers will think "hot" means prices up since 2013. I think this is more what you are looking for?

Cheers,
Blair

Thanks, by "hot" I mean in recent months or at least 2014....current, you might say....

Also, I am always a bit mystified by the many references to "early Babe Ruth" cards--how early is early? With Boston? Pre-Goudey? Or what?

Hey, you watch it right there, Mistuh!;)

Remember, the Yanks are in the AL East -- they got a shot.

For early Ruth, I am referring to early 1920's and anything previous to that.

Hey...I am tried and true Yankees fan for life...BUT...with the likelihood of Tanaka being done...it's not looking good! And yes...I will never write them off...just don't think they have a chance even if they were to make the playoffs...not likely this year!

As for hot right now as you already stated that the CJ 14's are besides that I have seen a slight increase in auctions towards the 33 Goudey's & the CJ 15's a bit as well. I've been watching them a bit recently just to see if it would be another set I would dive into. I decided to stay away at the moment. Besides that Ruth's are and Mantles stuff seems to always have good money coming in and the higher the grade the more money they have been bring more recently.

In conclusion

33 goudey's HOF/Difficult cards brining a better premium as of now
CJ 14's really hot and even some of the 15's
Ruth n Mantles

I'd agree that early Ruth (Red Sox) or any Ruth for that matter is hot!! Also mantle '52 topps. Some of the rare backs (Red Cross T 207) and rare E cards like the E 103 set seem to be holding well when they are made available.

Cold: Most cards post 1975....haven't seen anything less than a 8 in a PSA or SGC holder bring "new" money at auction in quite some time. But I'll admit, I don't really follow the new stuff....

All pre-war HOF rookies are doing quite well right now.

But the most drastic "hot" to "Luke warm" transformation is the 1980 Charlotte O's Ripken cards. From late 2013 to early 2014, there have been over 20-25 1980 Ripken ML cards sold. The first 10-15 were on fire w/ record prices each day...I think the fire is finally dying out.

ullmandds 07-12-2014 08:00 AM

Not sure about hotness...because they just don't seem to come up very often anymore...but...T213-I, T216, and D303 have virtually disappeared?!
