I drove to Schwenksville, PA yesterday to watch 19c baseball recreated. While walking to the field, wearing my Net54 Cy Young tee-shirt, one of the players came up to me and said he belonged to the forum. We introduced ourselves, and I met our forum member RobW (Wishnick?). I stayed through nine innings but had to leave. Here's a shot of Rob as he cranked a hit that was, sadly, caught on one bounce for an out.

Good to meet you, Rob!

Cheers, Mike Peich

What other major rule differences are there other than the one bounce catch and your out rule?

I believe that the pitches are delivered in a different manner. Can you soak the players with the ball?

Thanks, Mike! Pleasure to meet you as well! Hope you had a nice time out there. All, there are teams throughout the country that play this. We happen to play by 1864 rules, as does the rest of our league. Some play by later rules.

Some of the major rule differences between modern baseball and the rules of 1864 that we play by (in no particular order):
1) No gloves are worn (the ball used is the same size as a modern ball, but has a little sponginess on the outer layer)
1) Pitching is underhand
2) 3 Balls is a walk, 3 strikes a strikeout. However, before there can be a called ball, the pitcher receives a warning for throwing an non-strikeable pitch. The next non-strikeable pitch is Ball One. Same thing for batters-if the batter does not swing at a strikeable pitch, they are given a warning, and then strikes can be called. Foul balls do not count as strikes.
3) The first bounce of the ball, no matter where on the field, determines if the ball is fair or foul.
4) Ball can be caught on one bounce (bound) and is an out. Base runners can advance without tagging is ball caught on one bounce. Base runners must tag first before advancing if ball is caught in the air.
5) Base runners cannot advance on a foul ball
6) If you overrun any base, including first base, you can be tagged out
