1933 Goudey Set Complete (ish... okay, not really...)

I reached a milestone last night, "completing" the 1933 Goudey set minus anyone with the last names Lajoie, Ruth or Gehrig (97.1% overall). So, I'm missing only...

53 - Babe Ruth
92 - Lou Gehrig
106 - Nap Lajoie SP
144 - Babe Ruth BAT DP
149 - Babe Ruth
160 - Lou Gehrig
181 - Babe Ruth

...but, in the traditional sense that the T206 set can be "complete" without Wagner, Doyle, Magie, O'Hara, and Demmitt, I figure I have done the 1933 Goudey equivalent! Here are a few of my precious beauties.

I'd like to know how many others in the Net54 Experience are or have been putting together the 1933 Goudeys. Show 'em if ya got 'em!! :D

Great cards!
I've recently fallen in love with the set. I've been picking up random HOF's, in low grade with decent eye appeal.
I was considering a HOF run, but for the reasons mentioned above, will probably skip the big boys.
May go for one Ruth and one Gehrig eventually.
The Ott portrait is currently my favorite card in the hobby.
Some real beauties in that set.

ZachS 06-18-2014 07:49 AM

Amazing accomplishment even without the $$$$$$$$ cards. I absolutely love the colors in this set. I have a #53 Ruth and a few cards of Paul Richards (one of my favorite cards of all-time).

Congratulations!

Hopefully you can run across some deals like this one. It's a beautiful card and in person the colors are incredible... but that missing corner killed the grade (also lowered the price considerably though!)

Congrats! Real Beauties !

The cornerstone of my collection is #144

- but I will never attempt a complete set (not even all the Ruths)

RGold 06-18-2014 09:21 AM

My set is now about 99% complete, missing the Lajoie card and one of two Lou Gehrig cards. I am still looking to upgrade 70 cards.

Three of my favorites. :D:D:D

Those are right smart looking Goudeys, T206Guy. I especially like the Ott. I threw together a '33 set about six or seven years ago off eBay when you could do that sort of thing. Busted out the slabs and put 'em in a Roop binder. Link to IE gallery. Must say that your cards are a quantum or two nicer than mine.

I really like that Tris Speaker.

I have 225/240 of the '33 Goudey set, including the 53-Ruth and 92-Gehrig. I don't plan to get the others, tough to justify the expense in my mind. I also have a difficult time accepting the Lajoie as part of the set knowing that it wasn't produced in '33.

It is a nice set with many big name players included, congratulations on your collection as well as others who have posted.

T206Collector.....Congrats on your "complete" set. I started the '33 Goudey set a couple of months ago. I'm up to around 20 or so and am staying in the 3-4 grade range. I'm saving up for a Gehrig and Ruth and hopefully will be able to afford one eventually. So far, this is probably my best and actually now one of my favorite cards in my pre-war collection:

RGold 06-19-2014 09:16 AM

Nice Hack Wilson. The artwork on that card is not one of my favorites. There are a few clunkers in the set. :D:D:D

Love the '33 Goudeys....and as previously stated one of my very first "big", for me, purchases in the hobby was a 144 Ruth from Gar Miller. Since when i got it it had a wrinkle through his face that I hadn't seen from the Xerox he sent me, I eventually upgraded to this one...

ZachS 06-19-2014 10:02 AM

6'2" and weighs 210 lbs... I'm not buying it.

ethicsprof 06-19-2014 10:45 AM

great looking cards,Paul!

all the best,
