June 6, 1925 - Eddie Collins - Show Em!
3 Attachment(s)
It was 89 years ago today - in 1925 - that Eddie Collins collected his 3000th base hit...off Walter Johnson no less! Collins became only the 6th major leaguer to hit the 3000 milestone.
Feel free to show off your Eddie Collins and/or Walter Johnson items!!! |
Just bought this Walter Johnson !

That Johnson is awesome. That is my kind of card - looks of a 6 or 7, with a minor blemish on the back that brings it down to a reasonable level.

Recently picked this up from a Net member. One of the best portraits in the T206 set, IMO.

A fun one because of the mystery it presents: what in the world was it doing in the little town of Paita, Peru? (For more, visit http://www.sportingoregon.com)

Johnson's portrait, and the $100,000 infield (Eddie Collins is second from the left). Johnson and Collins are my favorite pre-war players, so you know I'm going to love this topic! Keep them coming, guys! |

fun fact ... although Eddie never led the league in sacrifice hits, he's the MLB all-time leader in that stat with 512. Jake Daubert is a distant 2nd with 392.

One of the fun aspects of collecting Eddie Collins is that he was in so many different PreWW2 sets. Of the deadball era players, he probably has more vintage cards available than all others than Ty Cobb. Here are some that haven't been shown yet.

I have quite a few Eddie Collins cards, he has an amazing set of stats when you think about it!
I only have a few of Walter Johnson, he of the amazing stats himself...and some amazing baseball cards. The attached cards notwithstanding ,both Barney and Eddie have some cards that do not look anything like the men...but hey, it's art :) |

4 and 5 of the $100K infield are represented nicely on these T202s (Collins/Baker one of my favorite T202 combos), as well as a lot of action all around on the bases.
Attachment 148007Attachment 148009 I always thought his "mouth open" portrait looked like a bad class photo. Attachment 148008Attachment 148011 Attachment 148012Attachment 148010 |

I actually owned that picture (unless there's more than one of them out there) and sold it on ebay over 10 years ago. It's one of the pieces that I miss most from my old collection. Just an excellent candid shot. I don't know the history, but I always thought that it was taken during the 1910 World Series between the Cubs and A's. Glad it belongs to a veteran Net54 member! Best, Steve |
Steve,
Thank you, it's a great shot. I bought it from a Net54 member Dan Bretta. |
