True Pop Numbers For The Gehrig 1925 Exhibit RC?
 

Just wondering if anyone has ever done a count (even a rough/ballpark estimate) of the graded pop for the true 1925 "rookie" tint version, since both major TPGs have previously labeled the 1926s as the '25. Curious to know how few graded '25s there are.

PSA has 28 holdered and SGC has 17. So figure with crossovers and crack-resubs we're talking about 40 examples of both the 1925 and 1926 combined. Do we think it's safe to say they are evenly split, which would mean 20 slabbed examples of the "rookie" version-- or could the 1925 version be even rarer than 20 extant examples (possible raw examples notwithstanding)?

I agree with Jay on this issue. I think that we (collectors) generally tend to over estimate the number of examples of a card that are slabbed. Of course there will always be some outliars such as 52' Mantle and T206 Wagner.

I would guess you could double or more the pop reports for a true population. As time goes that will change but I think there are a lot of old school collections that aren't slabbed (yet). I have always thought that there is a lot more we haven't seen....

So any guesses as to the graded pop of the true 1925 tint version within the larger graded pop that has labeled both '26 and '25 as '25?

How many mistakes are there? Personally, I have no idea as I have never seen (studied) the mistakes and thought about their frequency vis a vis the real 1925s.

Matty, can you upload scans of the different variations and years. I should probably know this but I will just admit that I am the new guy to the board, and as you mention, following the labels on the graded cards is not reliable.

Humorously enough, I am mildly colorblind and so had to get the expert eye of the renowned Joe T to help me get a real 1925, as I did not trust my eye alone.

Some of them, depending on the scan settings, I can tell pretty easily-- but only if side-by-side. Much harder for me to discern when viewed solo. Here is my 1925 for reference... Below it is (what my colorblind a$$ believes) is an example of the 1926 tint.

These were both from auctions I followed from Legendary (so I would think the scanners about the same used), the 1925 from a 2012 auction, the 1926 from a 2013 auction-

If the 1925 Gehrig Exhibit is becoming more recognized as being his true rookie card.....why does it seem that only people "in the know'...recognize this fact. I also assume that the value of these cards validates this thought. Does anyone have any ideas of where the price point lies with this card...considering grade and condition?

I try to be as on top of the major auctions as work permits, so may have missed one but I don't believe one has hit the market in quite a while. Per VCP, last nice one was offered way back in 2012. There was a lone low-grade example offered in Jan 2014 that had an extremely damaged corner. Would be very curious to see what the next eye appealing 1925 commands at a major AH, with the tint knowledge having circulated to a wider extent since the 2012 offering.

In 1997 I bought one from a Mastro phone auction for about 2500..I was on vacation in Jamaica when I won it. It was raw and they said it was nrmt-mt. When I got it graded it came back in EX. I was bummed but then sold it to Hal Lewis for $10,000 a few years later. It was a record at that time. I don't know where prices are today as I haven't checked them but I think the '25 Exhibit has been fully recognized as his rookie for quite some time.

I have recently just had the good fortune of picking one of these gems up and i had someone who should have knowledge(reputable auction house) tell me that it may be worth $1000. Grant it that it has not been graded...but should grade in an around 4... This confirms the fact that people just dont know what this card is all about...

Be careful as there are good fakes of this card out there. When I hear of great deals I get worried. The last graded 4 I saw went for 5k and that was 2 years ago.

The auction house may also have been confused by the Gehrig exhibit since the 1925, 1926, and 1927 all share the same image, but have different color tints (and a few other small things like how the player name is displayed on the card). The auction rep may have thought it was a 1927 Exhibits, which was the reason for the $1000 quote.

I actually took the time and explained the facts about the tint...and that it was definitely a 1925 Exhibit....didn't make a difference...obviously! it just stands to reason that there are very knowledgeable contributing members of this forum, and other resources out there that, should be "in the know"....and just don't know.
