New SGC flip proposal by Joe G.
1 Attachment(s)
I want to take a quick poll about the flip Joe G did. I think it's the best looking flip I have ever seen. (nice work Joe)
*Suffice it to say there is no going back to the old one. Forget it. It's not secure enough and it ain't happening according to SGC. That being said....just curious of the response on this one? |
Love it
|
They might stay the same as what they are doing but I can say they are in fact at least discussing this one Joe G did.....
|
I also love it. It would lead to my using them in the future for sure.
|
If they do end up going with Joe's design, he should at least be allowed the first card slabbed with the new design with a special designation in a line on the flip. Although a 0.5% commission on each card slabbed would be nice. :D
|
I like it!
|
This proposed flip looks awesome!
|
Simple but sharp!
|
I love it too. SGC customers are some of the most loyal in the hobby. Taking account of your customers view seems like a no brain-er for continuing to please their loyal base as well as their bottom line.
|
I really like the one proposed by Joe.
|
Literally all my cards are raw. The only time they get graded is when they go to an AH (ironically, I never get to see them that way in person). I voted for Joe's design, as that's how I think they will be best presented.
If SGC decides to go this way, does Joe get a stipend?;) |
This is a more informative poll for SGC to look at since the last one included an option to keep the old label, and we know that that is not an option.
|
After reviewing all the posts on a couple of threads, there seems to be pretty good concensus that, regardless of whether one thinks that there needed to be a change at all, the GREEN BORDER is a critical part of an SGC slab's overall aesthetic and needs to be incorporated into any new design.
Kudos to SGC if they are, in fact, re-considering. |
I like this one alot, of course "some" people will say we are following the leader here, but after personally looking over all the photoshops I prefer the one by Joe. It stands out to me.
|
Joe,
I really like it. Hopefully, SGC will take this flip into consideration. I'm not a fan of the one they are planning to use, and I hope it isn't to late to tweek it, and use the above example. Tony |
Yes, I love it. It's exponentially better than their proposed new version and would be, by far, the sharpest in the industry IMO.
Edit: Voting is overwhelmingly in favor of this version 44-1 (Joe's vs. SGC proposed) at the moment. I'd call it a landslide so far |
I'm more worried about the Ryan getting a 92
|
Love it!
|
I like the design as Joe mocked up the best so far, however, my only concern is how closely, other than the color, it resembles the PSA label.

Joe G's does look great I must say
|
That Joe G, whoever he is, may not know much about cards, but he sure knows his flips.
|
That would solve my uniformity issue. Love it and would support that. Cool...
|
How about the SGC Authentic flip? I assume SGC would want these to look similar. If Joe G.'s suggestion is approved, would these get a red border?

Beautiful flip Joe. I really hope SGC does this. Vote recorded.
|
Voted Joe G, to me his is far better than SGC's proposed. If they use his design, I'd very much hope he gets some form of compensation (discounted submissions, or even just a straight check) since I'm sure they used paid employees or outside consultants come up with that other design.

Looks like the overwhelming number of customers don’t mind change at all, they just prefer a good, reasonable, vetted change. The customer is always right, in retail.
With the Joe G. flip becoming the new holder (predicted...assumed...hoped) I will offer to send in my 12,000 SGC cards currently SGC holdered for SGC re-holdering. Of course this may be an overly optimistic determination of the cards I currently have or just an addition of a few too many zero's. Congrats to Joe G. when SGC adopts the 'new' new label, which will always be referred to as the "Joe G. Label". Bummer for the original graphic designer who has seen his/her creation roundly flogged in the court of public opinion. |
Going forward the most famous "Flip" will no longer be Flip Wilson. It will be Flip Gonsowski.
|
I think SGC should go ahead with their plan, and PSA should switch to dark green.
|
I am actually considering switching to SGC for good. I like their customer service the best and love the black gaskets. The flip was always the one drawback, albeit a minor one. This proposed label would convince me to go all the way on converting to SGC.

Edited to add: I only mention this because you said you like the gaskets. The slippery gaskets and their postcard authentication service are the only things I don't like about them (the black color is great); otherwise, they do a pretty good job. |
It's freaking awesome. They'd be crazy to not at least consider it.
|
117/4/4/21. Pretty sure it breaks down something like this.
117-Please reconsider, I prefer SGC and don't want to leave you 4-I'm a volume dealer and support SGC blindly 4- nice effort, but I'm OCD and require a green border but am also a bit passive 21-what are we voting on again, and where am I? |

Having said this, I agree with Scott that they should fix the gasket. In my opinion, this is a far more important issue. Best regards, Eric |
Thanks Jay and others, I've had a good chuckle at some of these responses, classic. I followed this thread today as time allowed and finally have a moment to post.
I'm glad others seem to like the flip. My hope in all this is that SGC decides on a label that retains a good look while incorporating all the security features they desire. I've opted to grade certain portions of my collection, some of my favorite cards, including my N172s, all with SGC. I'd like to continue grading with SGC and will if they retain a good looking label that resembles the old. I'd be honored if they pick a label similar to my suggestion (which was very similar to some of the other board members recommendations). Thanks Leon for posting the poll :) |
Definitely Joe's flip
|
Any updates Leon?
|
It would be easy for them to dig their heels in and stick with the new flip that nobody likes, but I hope they realize this is also an opportunity to make a lot of their customers really happy.
|
I don't think I have used the word "flip" as many times in my whole life as I have the last few days...it's starting to sound like "selfie" to me and is starting to sound really annoying!!!!!
On a more relevant note...I don't collect flips...while most of my collection is now graded...it is more for resale purposes. SGC is by far my preferred grader of choice for my collection of keepers...I sometimes use PSA to sell...not to keep. MY only sets are all sgc grraded...and while the visual appeal of the flip is important to me what's more important to me is the way the slabs fit together. PSA cards get "lost" in my sea of SGC slabs and I often "lose" them temporarily which is annoying. MY whole beef in this thing is that I like SGC...they are a great bunch of guys...and do the best job in the TPG business in my opinion. So I would want a company that I like...and use...to have a an aesthetically pleasing slab to represent their high quality service. Additionally I am a fan and advocate of good design...in all aspects of my life...I cringe when I see poorly designed logos...products especially coming from big companies with the means to do better. This is my gripe...SGC can and should put forth a better flip than the initial one proposes...ie Joe G's flip. |

Some of our members who express strong opinions probably haven't ever even submitted to them. However, those folks very well might have SGC graded cards, and buy and sell them, so that can't be ignored. I feel SGC will probably wait and see what more gets said and done before they do anything. They are fielding a ton of phone calls too. My strong recommendation was to indeed take a step back, let a bit of time (a few days) go by, and see what transpires. With big decisions it's almost always better to take some time to make it. At then end of our last conversation the last thing I said was "do what your customers want, within reason, keep them as your main focus, make a good decision based on them, and all will be good." If businesses take care of their customers, and have a good product, the rest takes care of itself. And it is true, from my experience moderating this forum and running some businesses, you can never make everyone happy. But you can try :). And whomever is saying they feel this might be a money grab is off base, I believe. This process came about because the industry is crying for more security in the cases. I believe PSA has recently upgraded and as a competitor of theirs SGC needed to do likewise, not just for competitive purposes, but for their own need in having a more secure holder. Some conspiracy theorists will always think otherwise. I absolutely don't think it's a money grab. |
Just got my 1921 E121 Harry Harper back from SGC today and it had the new flip version that everyone hates. Lets say that I was less than pleased as it sticks out like a sore thumb. Really wish they had left well enogh alone. They definitely need the green borders to look right.

When SGC previewed their new flip design on their homepage, the card they used to demonstrate how it would look was a 1968 Topps Nolan Ryan. The entire card was not visible in the preview (which included three cards in total, including an example of what the AUTH flip would look like). So, I went to Google, then Ebay, and found an SGC-graded 1968 Topps that was graphically clean enough to use in mock ups. This is the one I selected: http://imageshack.com/a/img839/3048/ncom.png I then re-sized the example of their new flip, and superimposed it on top of the old flip. Then, I added a green border around it: http://imagizer.imageshack.us/a/img842/5340/7x9n.png Joe then took this mockup, shrank the lines and SGC lettering down, and inverted the green and white to come up with the final design. http://net54baseball.com/attachment....1&d=1401027468 |
The background watermarks should be parallel.
The slant looks cheesy. The rest of it is okay. |
Does anyone know when this new Joe G. proposed SGC flip will be put into circulation? I understand it may take time, I'm just curious. I've been wanting to submit some cards to SGC, but I would rather wait until the "new" new flip is available. Again kudos to SGC for doing this. I will continue to be a loyal customer.
