1958 Topps Kaline with yellow name???

1 Attachment(s)
I thought the yellow variation Kaline came with a yellow name. I assume the team name has been colored in then slabbed? Anyone have any thoughts?

ALR-bishop 05-21-2014 09:57 AM

58 Kaline

George--can you enlarge the scan ? I take it Detroit Tigers is in yellow on this card. What does the slab say ? Do you have this card ?

Edit---never mind, found it

autograf 05-21-2014 01:57 PM

It's on ebay......

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1958-TOPPS-A...ca#ht_41wt_924

Hard to tell from a 2D scan but it doesn't look colored in. I would think the black where the team name is would maybe have a different color to it unless someone used a really fine point and colored it in. Interesting card...........

LEIDEMEG 05-21-2014 05:13 PM

Very interesting to say the least.

Oddly enough I found one other with a yellow name and yellow team name on a google search. It was graded a PSA 8.5. Not sure how to explain this card if it's a rarity or altered? But why would anyone alter it.

Additional kaline yellow name and yellow team name

Found this additional one

Easy answer

Why? Money.

This is the "rare" double yellow variation. Only 2 known to exist. yada yada yada.

So the motive is obvious. The question is ... is it real?

I find it odd that the two known examples are both in holders though. Not all yellow letter Kalines are. (Maybe not even the majority.)

Cheers,
Patrick

No attention was brought to it in the previous auction of the PSA 8.5...ie...no mention of a "rare" yellow team variation in an attempt to squeeze out a larger hammer price. That's what makes it so odd to me. I just stumbled onto the one on eBay and something didn't look right as I always look for just a yellow name when I see the kaline card. Here is the auction write up for the 8.5 that sold

1958 Topps Al Kaline, Yellow Letters #70 PSA NM-MT+ 8.5. This stunning example is as good as it gets for an 8.5 and is in fact is the only 8.5 on record with only 5 examples having reached a higher grade. At first glance, you would think this should have been graded higher as well. The centering, corners, vibrant red hue, bright evenly sized borders are all nearly flawless. Could the one tiny ink dot above the "a" in Kaline be the only flaw? We feel the answer is yes and it may be a very long while before another of this visual magnitude comes along. A very strong NM-MT+ example not to be passed on. We would be remiss to not mention that this is a scarce "Yellow Letter" variation.

I collected the 58 topps set for some time. There are yellow name and yellow team versions. Most are found in cards 1-120 if Im not mistaken and the Kaline and Clemente yellow team are quite possibly the most costly.

Yellows

Yes, there are a bunch of 58 yellow team or yellow name variations, but so far as I knew, no yellow name and team variations

Also this older PSA article points out the yellow varations

Cardboard connection also points out some good info. I tried to learn all I could when building the set. Kinda sad now I sold it

Blackie---I have the set myself and all the SCD and Registry listed Yellow variations, but I did not see any reference in any of these articles to a Kaline-yellow team and name.

By the way, George Vrechek, the author of one of the articles you cite, is one of my favorite variation chasers. He is a source of great info on them.

None of the articles mention the blue Aaron that has started to show up either.

Blackie 05-21-2014 07:56 PM

Let me dig some more on this. I never found anything on the blue tint Aaron.

This board is as good as place as any to get info on variants :)

Notice that Al said ...

... "variants" NOT "deviants"! :D

ALR-bishop 05-22-2014 09:35 AM

Variants or deviants

I could go either way. I think the same choice may apply to most of us collectors here:)

timzcardz 05-22-2014 10:08 AM

And here I thought that I had finally finished my master set?

I'll have to pull mine out tonight and look at the Kalines I have.

Still trying too

Figure this one out guys. Again, I have seen a ton of Kaline yellow name over the years. The fact that the card on eBay has not only the yellow name of Kaline but the team name in yellow is the part in question. To then do a search and find an additional PSA 8.5 Kaline with yellow name and yellow team name is what we are trying to figure out. It doesn't appear either card was altered nor was any mention made of the rarity. So, is it an additional variation that has never been noticed in 56 years. Does anyone else have another example in their collection?

timzcardz 05-23-2014 06:15 AM

Checked mine last night. Yellow name w/ white team, so nothing more to add to this conversation.

glynparson 05-23-2014 03:17 PM

Just checked mine

Yellow name white team.

LEIDEMEG 05-25-2014 09:54 PM

Final bid of $567

Ok guys, since I found the variation after 56 years..lol...who was the lucky winner since it was obviously a member of our forum. Also to the winner, are you going to try and get the card re-graded with the variation mentioned? George

timzcardz 05-26-2014 05:45 PM

As much as I would l ok ve to have it, it wasn't me. I came up significantly short.

FYI, there have been several sold over the last few years., and not at the inflated price this one went for.

LEIDEMEG 05-26-2014 07:10 PM

Tim

Do you have links or pics of kaline's with the tigers team in yellow you reference that you could post. I think at this point it is safe to say that this is an additional variation to the normal Kaline with yellow name. I wonder if anyone has seen an additional yellow variation outside of the norm.

timzcardz 05-26-2014 07:26 PM

No links right now.

I went through a bunch of previous sales of the kaline yl on vintagecardprices.com and found several of the double yellow variation graded by psa, bvg, and if I remember correctly sgc as well.

LEIDEMEG 05-26-2014 08:35 PM

Thanks!

Hard to believe we hadn't heard about it before.

toppcat 05-27-2014 03:37 PM

It seems to me the yellow/yellow Kaline could have been a color process masking error that was only partially corrected initially but very early in the run. Sounds like there are at least two out there and I'll bet a few more exist.

timzcardz 05-28-2014 06:47 AM

Here are the 9 sales, of 7 unique cards, that I know of, with approximate sale prices and dates.

Thanks for the great info Tim

timzcardz 05-28-2014 06:57 AM

Along with the PSA 8.5 in post 5 of this thread, that makes 8 unique cards, unless of course that was one that has been busted out and regraded.

ALR-bishop 05-28-2014 07:01 AM

8

Do 8 unique cards constitute an oxymoron ? :)
