Hobby Card Collectors Catalogue Jan.1, 1963
This is a bit off topic but I know some members enjoy seeing things from yesteryear. This periodical is made of quite high quality stock and fairly large, at 8 1/2" x 11". It has 24 pages including fronts and backs....and I picked a page to show some pricing....The Instructions on "how to order" made me smile...

The mounted sets are an interesting item. Has anyone ever encountered an album such as these?
|
I love how you could get a '52 Mantle for $1!
|
Awesome LL, keep 'em coming!!!
|
A1
I guess since none of my cards are A1, they would have been destroyed or sent to an orphanage.
Dave, Good question on the mounted sets...they must have gotten some takers on tha promo...it would be super cool to see one of these albums! |
Brian, Very intuitive on your part. Are we talking Russian dogs during the recent Winter Olympics or Babe Ruth? (trust me, I am both a canine and Babe lover).
Otherwise, the '51 Topps Red v Blue back pricing has me curious. Reds really have all the Stars, Blues are almost an afterthought. I guess the Blues were just not as common(?) The sort of "We have the world's largest..." type of promo: Same as then, same as now. :p |

There is no mention of the condition of the cards offered for sale. I guess at a buck apiece for 52 high numbers, you can have a little flexibility.
|
I also love the old school "Planetarium Station" address. Makes me want to play Bobby Darin's 'Sunday in New York' and grab a Checker Cab down to Toots Shor's.
|
Thanks for posting these Leon. It gives a great sense of the early days of the hobby.

T205 and T206 were issued between 1900 and 1915? Is that the extent of the knowledge back then?

and I will add this Beatles Concert Poster found in the same box of stuff. Can you imagine seeing them....and for free!! It is approximately 8 1/2 x 12. http://luckeycards.com/beatles.jpg |
"Beatles for Free"
Yeah, but who wants to sit through Derry and The Seniors!? |
where is a time machine when you need one?

Leon- if that poster is real, it's worth a ton. My guess is it's a reprint.:(
Edited to add it wasn't free. It was two shillings sixpence by 8:00 PM, or three shillings after 8:00. Still pretty cool to have been able to see them so early in their career, at a time when they were known almost only to their local fans. |
Johnny Tempest died at the age of 21..........
Faron played rhythm guitar for Johnny Tempest.
After Tempest died, he went on to form Faron's Flamingos. Watch them live at the Cavern in Liverpool. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4yz7rsv-Gs Faron was known as "the panda footed prince of prance". |
Wow, yours was published about half dozen years before I semi-seriously got into the hobby. The '39 Play Ball prices crack me up. Imagine, a Williams RC for .40? I don't think I paid much more for the sampleback. And Meccas, even now, they are still one of the best deals around. Just my $0.02:D
|
I'll take the '52 Topps set for $34.75 please...with inflation that's only about $266, aka about the same price as 6 to 10 '52 commons nowadays
|
If someone on here is working on a time machine , I'll donate $1.
If Beatle poster is real , I'd be interested also. Seen The Beatles in 1966. Leon, thanks for posting. My dad was born in 1922 and collected 1933 and 1934 Goudey's. He never even knew or seen tobacco cards when he was young. |
Mid-January 1961 The Beatles consisted of ( John, Paul, Geoge, Pete Best and Stu Stucliffe).
|
the 1952 topps advertisement states 3 error cards exist!
i'll go with Sain Page. who is the third? |
All times are GMT -6. The time now is 01:23 PM. |
