Blue-ifying the 1966 Topps
One thing I find odd about the 1966 Topps set is the decision to replace the natural color of some background areas in certain cards with blue tint. I guess maybe the photographer wanted to mute what were perceived as possible distractions and/or give some sort of 3-D effect to the subject, but I don't recall seeing this much if at all in other sets--maybe others here can post examples. There are many of these throughout the set, although here is the most obvious or extreme example--Eddie Stanky (not mine)

Nothing controversial or overly thought provoking, just one of those have you ever wondered why things. Maybe this has been covered elsewhere. Anyone have examples from other years? |
Never noticed that before-neato! I would think the tinting was done in production and not when the photos were taken. They do look pretty nice with the blue.

I've never noticed that either--thanks for pointing it out. And I love the word "blueify". I intend to use it as much as I can in the near future.

There are literally hundreds of '66 cards where they've blueified the backgrounds (I just went through them). That probably explains what happened on the Heffner purple tree card.
