Manny's Baseball Land
 

Just wondered if anyone else has fond memories of Manny's Baseball Land, which used to be located directly opposite old Yankee Stadium? When I first entered the hobby in 1971, I used to regularly order cards, yearbooks and photos from Manny's, then wait with growing anticipation for the exotic packages to be delivered to my home in the wilds of Western Canada. A couple of times my order got screwed up, arriving without some of the stuff I'd paid for, but the proprietors ALWAYS made good without complaint. I dealt with them for probably 4-5 years, and they were always top-notch. Have no idea what happened to the store, but their stock always seemed very impressive ...

Growing up in the 1980's, Manny's had a storefront location in Hackensack, NJ which I frequented often. Very cool assortment of everything baseball, including some nice vintage stuff. Very much unlike the sports fan/souvenir shops that you see in malls and ballparks around the country today.

I used to regularly receive their catalogs in the mail and would order various MLB related souvenirs from them. Fond memories.

According to Alan Rosen's autobiography covering many of his famous finds, TRUE MINT, Manny's son Miles called "Mr. Mint" Alan Rosen in 1989. He called Mr. Rosen about the idea of selling out their large stock of mint sports publications.

There were 50,000 yearbooks, primarily from 1962 - 1980, all teams. Mr. Rosen paid about $100,000. Alan, Joe Esposito, Alan's assistant Glenn Stuart, and six hired men spent 22 hours loading a truck and unloading it in a rented warehouse.

The book was published in 1994, and Alan wrote he sold all those pubs--'cause they were MINT!

I sure miss Alan Rosen's finds. His weekly SCD ads paved the way for sellers and finders to know whom to turn to if they had the good stuff to sell. Yeah, I know, I know. But look what gems he brought to the hobby!

I was on their mailing list and received full-color catalogs in the mail back in 1994, 95, 96; the mailing address was from Florida. Did they finally go "belly-up"?
