Someone please buy this pack and...

Open it!

http://bid.robertedwardauctions.com/...x?itemid=31930

It would be the greatest pack rip in the history of the hobby.

And as Bill O'Reilly once said, "F**k it, do it live!" so collectors around the world can see.

We could even organize a live pay-per-viewesque extravaganza (with proceeds going to a charity).

Plus hyping a pack rip like this would get the younger crowd (who love pack rips) interested in vintage cards.

Sounds like it could have all the fun of the GERALDO RIVERA SAFE OPENING.

Bugger if it turned out to be a 1912 cigarette pack! :(

From the side scan you can see Allen & Ginter branch. I don't think this pack has a card in it. One from the American Tobacco Company would more likely contain a card. Perhaps Jon Canfield can jump in.

I'd rather open a 1909 pack.

Isn't the California Wax-Wing the Honus Wagner of the bird-card collecting community?

Hey, say that 10 times fast...

Haha my roommate would totally do something like that. Last month I bought a nice Wusthof knife set and he accidentally threw away one of the knifes. Who does that?!...Oh the joys of living in a cramped overpriced NYC apartment with two roommates.

The Nasty Nati 04-02-2014 09:32 AM

Anyway I'm sure the buyer wants nothing to do with opening this pack, but if he (or she) does, broadcasting the pack rip live and charging people a fee to see it could work and the money could go to a great charity.

I don’t know maybe not enough people in the collecting community would care to see it live, but maybe a poll could determine that.

It wouldn’t be too hard to setup either. Basically you just setup a private live video on Vimeo or Youtube that is password protected. Pay money to a paypal account and you get the password and access to the live pack rip streaming video.

And if nothing significant is found in the pack, it's not a complete lost because the pack rip generated money to support a charity.

Probably a massive pipe dream though. :D

I Only Smoke 4 the Cards 04-02-2014 10:55 AM

I saw we buy the pack, open it and light up the old (and possibly really bad) cigs.

packs 04-02-2014 12:37 PM

There's a comedian who had a joke about movie studios using all the money they put into their movies to instead fill a room with money and charge people to see it.

it went something like why would they spend a 100 million dollars on that piece of crap? I would have paid 10 bucks just to see the 100 million dollars. And an extra 5 to have my 10 bucks added to the 100 million dollars.

Jayworld 04-03-2014 08:49 AM

I find it interesting that they state this in the last paragraph:

We would not recommend anyone purchasing this pack attempt to open it, as not only could this be very expensive, but the possibility exists for disappointment if there were no card at all or one were to wind up with a card from some nonsport tobacco-card set.

Kind of a disclaimer, don't you think?

Absolutely! They really can't guarantee what the contents of the package are.

It would be expensive if they had to refund the price and the value of the pack would be destroyed if it was opened. I can't imagine their insurance would cover them if the pack was opened.

thehoodedcoder 04-03-2014 08:33 PM

I had a serious bid in on this pack. Thank god I got out bid.

I'd be paying silly money for a pack with a card in it. This one does not fit that bill and now at 1500.00, that is like absurd for what it is.

One thing that I found interesting is Jon Canfield still hasn't make any comments on this thread even though his name is in the auction description.

Iron Horse 04-04-2014 10:45 PM

I'm all for the community here buys the pack and Leon can open it and do a live feed so we can all watch our investment :D
I'm in for a $100
Leon, care to organize this lol

Nothing fishy about the A&G side band... Liggett & Myers was given the former Allen & Ginter plant in Richmond in the breakup and continued, as had the ATC, to refer to it as the Allen & Ginter Branch.

Haven't people in the past x-rayed or MRId these packs to see if there is something that looks like a card inside?

Cheers,

I wondered the same thing. This would give you the size of the card if one existed but would not reveal the image.

rdwyer 04-07-2014 07:28 PM

It would be a T205, T206 or a Bird series card. Factory 25 only produced these 3 cards. One in Three chance. Who's got the balls?

wheitman 04-07-2014 10:12 PM

Sure

What a croc!!!

The Nasty Nati 04-08-2014 08:58 AM

I'll throw a $100 in the pot, just $1,500 more to go. :D...but it would be a blast to see. Maybe make it a mini "event" at the upcoming National.

NYHighlanderFan 04-15-2014 11:38 AM

I always thought the Allen and Ginter branch was Factory 42, NC and not Factory 25, VA. Therefore, considering the box has the L&M designation, it would have a much better chance holding a white border if it was a Factory 42.

I also predict it has a coupon inside with 10 stale ciggys, with nothing else, not even a fish.

Honestly, I'd pay $50 to see someone open a t206 pack...

We should all pitch in to buy/open it. Whatever the card is we should use it as the new March Madness Trophy :)

hshrimps 04-27-2014 11:55 PM

Guys...

It is time to pay for the investment. The pack ended at $9k. Some of you posted in this thread that they would throw in $100 or $50 for it. IT IS TIME TO PAY!!!

thehoodedcoder 04-28-2014 03:55 AM

9000 is INSANE.

2 people screwed each other.

+1 Absolutely nuts.

E93 04-28-2014 08:48 AM

Personally, I think it is an incredibly cool pack. I have no idea who won it, but I sure would be happy if it were in my collection. I don't get all the trash talking of other collector's purchases from behind a computer monitor. This pack is as likely as anything to have a T206 in it. Why the need to try to make people feel bad?
JimB

4815162342 04-28-2014 09:21 AM

The pack is cool, just not $9,000 cool.

12 count. Yeah right.

t206hof 04-28-2014 12:48 PM

A Sweet Caporal unopened pack in Gai 7 just hit on the Bay. Factory # is not mentioned in listing. Here is someone's chance to buy, open and find out. All it takes is 5 Grand and You know what made of steel.

rdwyer 04-28-2014 12:57 PM

For a thousand more

The Sweet Caporal box has the wrong Factory, District & State.
The Piedmont box is a 12 count.

No T205's or T206's in these boxes!

T206hof:

Wrong tax stamp. From the twenties.

hshrimps 04-28-2014 07:43 PM

I won the pack and I know there were at least two other bidders chasing the pack. I am simply asking whoever promised to chip in for the pack honor what they said. :D

Yes. I may consider opening it.

I wonder if PSA would slab it as a T206 pack?

rdwyer 04-28-2014 07:56 PM

PSA doesn't slab packs.

I never commited to anything

as I'm only posting now. Since my name is also Henry - I would happily pay you 30.00 to participate in some way as an interested party in viewing you opening the pack whether on the web or wherever. That's a firm offer.

wonkaticket 04-29-2014 04:19 AM

I'm in I just hope it contains a T58 goldfish card I need that one...I don't care if there's a Wagner etc.

rdwyer 04-29-2014 09:33 AM

PSA doesn't grade cigarette PACKS. Correct me if I'm wrong.

thehoodedcoder 04-29-2014 02:58 PM

If you show them a receipt, can you get a store credit?

If you wanted it $9000 bad, congrats on getting it.

I am just curious as to why you wanted it that badly. It was mentioned here before the auction ended that there is almost a zero percent chance it has a card in it.

Kevin

CardboardCollector 04-29-2014 03:19 PM

I would pay to watch you open the pack, but first you have to prove to me that you bought it and have it in hand. Also, I want to see a live video stream of the opening with full chat (i.e. Webex, gotomeeting) for blow by blow feedback by the audience.

You could even sell advertising and get sponsors on the lead in to the big showing.

This could be as fun as watching WWE. :)
