1941 Play Ball Wrong Back Checklist
I recently thought it would be fun to collect wrong back play ball cards as they are available, but still a twist to collecting to the play ball set. Soon after deciding to collect them there was a 42 card lot of them listed in a Legendary Auction, I was happy to win. What I haven't found is a check list of known fronts and backs so I thought I would share what I have with those wanting to know.

Andy,
I don't have a lot of them, but I try to pick them up when I see them. Some are out of my price range, but I think they are cool. Most of these I got for "cheaper" than their "right" back counters: Carl Hubbell front - Brancato back Harry Gumbert front - McQuinn back Pee Wee front - Judnich back Judnich front - Reese back Hudson front - Camili back I've seen a lot of other wrong backs, but sellers wanted much, much more than I wanted to pay! Cool idea - glad to see you have quite a few of them |
I updated the main checklist with the two that I didn't have that you brought to my attention. I do plan on adding to the list ones I know about, but don't own, but I have been very busy lately.
It seems that there are some that come up often, but there are some front back combos that don't seem to be that common. Again not an expert, so I am only surmising that the ones with the "Also look..." backs are harder to find. |
|
Interesting Gunboat/DiMaggio because that is now the third back for Gumbert.
I know at one point when I first started doing my research there was another DiMaggio combo, but I hadn't looked back to see whom it was. I also surmise that Low#/High# combos, like your Gumbert/Dimaggio are rarer. Because when I do see repeats or "opposite combos" (meaning seeing the same combo of players but who is on the back and front switches) they seem to come from the same series. Again I have just started looking so I could be wrong. |
Play upside down wrong Balls

Here is one that is not on your list -
#28 Marty w/ Auker back http://www.ebay.com/itm/1941-Play-Ba...item58acc2ec92 Seller wants a little too much for it in my opinion - |

I have finally got around to updating the list. In the past when I tried it would error out on me. Now that I am using an HTML table it fixed that problem, but it causes a spacing issue. There is extra info in the list since it is copied from my spread sheet (Including whether I own it and what duplicates I own). This should still be helpful for others.
I also have the spreadsheet on google drive if anyone would like a copy. Since I will now have constant access to it I will try and be better about updating it if you have something you know needs to be added. |
I added an update this morning. There was only one Hi series front not accounted for, 57 - Arnovich, I found a scan of one this morning.
There are 13 with no front or back accounted for on the list. They are: 1 "Eddie" Miller 3 "Bucky" Walters 4 "Duke" Derringer 7 "The Horse" Danning 8 "Mel" Ott 9 "Pinky" May 11 Debs Garms 13 "Jimmie" Foxx 19 "Charley" Gehringer (google search shows old ebay with a combo with 30- Lou Finney, but can't confirm who is front and back) 38 Atley Donald 41 Frank "Blimp" Hayes Along with the list above there are 9 more that don't have a front but have a back accounted for on my list. They are: 2 Max West 5 "Buck" McCormick 10 "Arky" Vaughn 14 "Ted" Williams 17 "Stormy" Weatherly 23 "Mac" McQuinn 31 "Joe" Kuhel 34 "Rollie" Hemsley 36 Barney McCosky 45 Elden Auker These lists are the ones I plan on doing more research on to see if they do exist and just not accounted for by us. |
Hi Andy

Perhaps the member who bought it from me ($18) will read this and solve this little mystery. Never Mind - looks like Ted Z is that lucky forum member. |

I was able to add to my collection tonight at the St. Louis Westport show. Also found a new combo and updated the list with it.
|
A new update has been added. Thank you to those that have been able to add to the checklist.
|
I have updated the list above for all your reference needs.

In case you are still keeping up this list, I have a #13 Foxx front, #36 McCosky back in my collection.
|
Nice Foxx. I haven’t tracked down all of these but I think I have enough to know the universe that should exist. If you think of these as 24 card groups/panels/series then the following are available:
Fronts 1-24 have 48-25 backs Fronts 25-48 have 24-1, 48-25 and 72-49 backs Fronts 49-72 have 48-25 and 72-49 backs Always looking to finish this project, PMs always open to sellers/traders |

Very neat. How did this happen to so many cards and who was the printer?
I can confirm a Chuck Klein front/Vince DiMaggio back -the only one I own and can send you a photo if you wish. |

I bought 63 from another member, flawless transaction... I have bunch of dups but only about half of the 144 unique combinations that I believe exist. I can post an updated list if interested.
I think the mystery is what a full uncut sheet looked like. You see 24 card panels sometimes advertised as full sheets but there are also some wide uncut strips that contain rows from multiple panels. Figuring out those sheet puzzles is the coolest part of collecting wrong backs IMO. |
