The Beauty of Goudey (1933)
 

I have quietly been socking away well-priced 1933 Goudey cards for about a year now and am just 16 away from completion. Pretty soon I'll have to change my name to R319Collector...

Anyway, I am struck by the beautiful pastels on some of these cards. While there are certainly a fair share of unremarkable poses or images, there are some very colorful poses in the set that are just striking.

They are all graded 8. :) Other than that, each one depicts a player whose MLB career lasted over 20 years.

BTW, I agree with the OP. Many of the Goudeys have great artwork. Two of my favorites are Bob O'Farrell and Paul Richards. Also am partial to the Mickey Cochrane. It's as if he is staring right back at you. Sort of the Mona Lisa of the set.

I also very much like the artwork on the 33 Goudeys. Aside from the cards already mentioned, I like the O'Doul batting and the Moe Berg with the tripped out background!

Another thing about the 1933 Goudey set that I always thought was cool was the fact that the last 11 cards of the set are all of the 1933 World Series Champion Giants. The cards were obviously very popular as they must have been produced well into November, 1933 or even later!

This is one of my favorite cards of all time. It's one of the very few non-St. Louis items I have in my collection.

Great cards everyone! '33 Goudeys are definitely undervalued at this time. Much like the T206, the artwork is incredible.

Paul - I love that Grove. One of my favorites in the set. Very difficult to find a nice sharp example. My goal at some point will be to add a Grove and Foxx to the collection.

'33 Goudey Ruth's seem to be quickly escalating in price. #144 is my favorite pose. I love the background and pastel colors.

Goudey's hands down are some of my favorite cards to date. Love the art work especially the 33 34 and 38. I never tackled the 33 just because so many big name cards and would never be able to afford them. As for the 34 n 38 thats a different story much easier to obtain. But the 1933 Wow totally agree with you on that its on hell of a set. Best of luck on the last few you need.

These are some really nice cards. They remind you of just how nice this set was when it came out. So many cards from that set that you see today are pretty beat up.

This is my first pre-war card. My first "real" card I bought.

I love the background on that Demmeree!!

I should have mentioned that I got the Grove when I was 16 back in 1989 at the Pier 92 show in NYC. It is as permanent a fixture in my collection as I have.

I would say over half the 1933 Goudey set has incredibly appealing artwork. Many of my favorites have been posted...my preference leans to the full body action with scenery backgrounds, as well as the cards picturing the player's upper body with solid color backgrounds. Here are a couple that haven't been seen yet on this thread...the Davis is just striking in my eyes:

My latest (and only in a while) Goudey pick up is the Berg. Love the green camo looking background, almost foreshadowing his role in WWII

The red Ruth is probably my favorite of the 4. I picked this one up around 2000. It's still raw and no plans to grade it.. hopefully there are no alterations I'm missing!
