Need opinion on Paige and Goslin
A well respected member (who shall remain nameless) questioned the validity of two of my signatures and I would like to throw it out there for others to comment. Constructive criticism will be appreciated, not argued against.
Satchel Paige (quick note, i got item with the ticket stub from 9/29/65 game off ebay). Inside Program it notes Paige on Roster (during his 1965 "comeback" with the Athletics, although he only pitched one day, he was on active roster until October). I assumed it was signed at ballpark on 9/29/65- Goose Goslin-Honestly, got this off of ebay last year and thought it looked good at the time. I know the risks with ebay, but I was buying Goslin, not Gehrig. Here are two authenticated exemplars, hope they help
|
Paige looks fine. Goslin looks off to me (like a wife or secretarial signature).
|
Paige looks OK.
Goslin looks like one I sent to PSA that got rejected. |
OK, I am pretty sure that Goslin is bad and Paige is good. Maybe seller will give me refund, who knows.
|
Paige is 100% authentic! :)
|
I think Paige is real and Goslin is not.

Paige & Goose
Agree with all of the above... the Satch looks good and and the goose looks off...
Gate at the base of the first G looks too wide & the start of each of the "g's" looks to be uncharacteristic of Leon's signature... |
Thanks everyone! Will destroy the current Goslin autograph.
Ok, a $40 loss-ISO a Goose Goslin autograph? |
I wouldn't destroy it, it looks vintage and while it looks secretarial, sometimes keeping things like that are part of us educating ourselves as a group as to the habits of signers through the mail and perhaps who was signing for them (wives, sisters etc.). I would keep it in a sleeve and just label it as secretarial. I DO NOT think it is a forgery, too many signs that it was executed while Goslin was alive.

No, I don't think it was purposely signed in order to fool a collector to be buy, i do believe it was ghost signed to appears a collector in the early 70s. I will not destroy it, although I don't know what "educational" purpose it will serve. Not a horrible loss of $, but a loss of $ no less. What is worse is that I want to replace it ASAP, but will not pay current BIN prices on ebay. I will have to learn patience and wait for one to come up at auction.
At least the Paige auto, which was considerably more, appears real. Meanwhile, my HOF count has dropped to 207, with 208 on the way from Jim. |
