RMY auction pickups
Does anyone know what time that bad boy ended? I went to bed after 3 and it was still going strong with new bids every minute or so.
I won a few Gehrig's which I'll post shortly. Anyone else here get anything? Let's see them. |

This one had me at hello
|
Eric,
I saw that one too. That is absolutely beautiful. If I collected all Yankees and not just Gehrig, I would've been all over that one as well. |
After starting a thread two years ago trying to gain more knowledge on vintage sports photography I bought 3 wire photos at that time but hadn't done anything in this area since. I finally signed up for RMY this time around and found myself unable to decide what images to focus on. In the end I was glad to make these the first images to my collection since that post:
Cochrane Rookie: http://rmyauctions.com/ItemImages/000001/1343a_sm.jpeg Musial greeted by Jackie Robinson: http://rmyauctions.com/ItemImages/000001/1502a_sm.jpeg ...And a nice Bobby Wallace image: http://rmyauctions.com/ItemImages/000002/2711a_sm.jpeg |
Hung in on 3 items until the 2 o`clock area. Woke up today winning the 1946 Montreal Royals Robinson composite photo. Hoping to maybe mate it with an auto I`ve seen on the B S T board this past year!

RMY Auction

I bid on 8 photos, was the under bidder in 6.
Congrats to Rhys as it seemed to me that realized prices were pretty strong. Here is my sole win. I really like the composition of this photo of Bob Feller posing for photographers at Cleveland Stadium after returning from the Navy in WWII. This will make a nice complimentary piece to a scored program and ticket stub that I have to Feller's 1st game back. This photo was taken one day before Feller returned the mound, to once again confound major league hitters... Rapid Robert did not disappoint as he got the win after being gone for 44 months. Some guys just have talent! |

Scott that Feller compliments those items well. In an effort to contain myself I decided to go after one photo with any serious intent. I always seem to spread myself too thin in these extravaganzas by courting multiple beauties only to go home alone. I have no idea what time this party ended but I did place my winning bid around closing time (2:00AM PST) and woke up with a keeper and still had money left in my pocket;)
|
Mike,
Wow...5am EST!!! It seems that your winning bid was probably the second to last bid in the auction. I can tell because in the search settings, one of the choices will list photos by most recent bid. Your photo shows up as the second most recent, so you must've been the second to last bid prior to it ending. Damn! You west coast guys really have the advantage in auctions that end this way. Great photos everyone. Congrats. |
OK Here are my pickups. I don't collect as an investment, so I was more then pleased with the group of Gehrig's I came away with last night. I stayed away from the high dollar ones as none of them really had that special something that spoke to me.
I stayed up to almost 3am, but am very happy with the results. 1938 Lou ropes his teamates. It would be pretty cool if you could find a copy of one the pictures the photographers pictured took. You would have a nice set. Congrats, Mark |
Some terrific photos in the RMY auction and some very strong prices to match. Four thousand bucks for the Conlon Matty. Oh my! Had a bookmark bid down on it but was blown out of the way early. Went 8 for 22, four baseball related, one football, the rest Americana. Auction looks to have ended right at 2am west coast time. Don't know if the clock counted down - I was distracted - or Rhys just pulled the plug but am glad it finally ended so I could rest up for the hockey game.
Am looking forward to the next RMY auction. Between it and Henry Yee I have switched gears a bit from collecting old cardboard and have picked up a lot of neat photos. http://photos.imageevent.com/kawika_...20Delivery.jpg David, I really love this image of Dizzy Dean, although I did not bid on it. Nice pickup! The Conlon Matty is off the charts nice, but that really was a strong realized price! |
Lots of cool Gehrig's for your collection Mark!
Finding the Feller photo that you described would really be neat. I'll have to keep my eye out for one. |

I love the home run baker, cochrane rookie, DiMaggio, Lou and future wife ,feller and umpire photos. Great pickups fellas. I looked back and certainly some good photos that went cheap(deals to be had). The rookie scooter and rookie elston went for peanuts. I picked up the Ruth 700 hr. The image quality isn't the best but it certainly is historic and have only seen one other. I paid a lil more than I wanted but as I was just told by a fellow collector.. "We always do". And I guess that is pretty spot on! Ha!

Ben,
That is a really nice Ruth. Definitely a historic moment in time. Congrats on your win. Thanks for your kind words. I love the pictures of Lou that show the big smile and his human side. Mark Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk |

Also love those contest beauties - nothing wrong with today's definition of 'beauty', but loved those Marilynesque women with a little meat on their bones. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_WJ3_s8ZYbQ...1950Bowman.JPG |
I went after a few Conlons and lost, and a few cabinets and ended up with just this one.
For anyone who was an underbidder on the Walter Johnson portrait, I have the same 1920's print (same press stamp, size, image quality) in lesser condition, for sale on my website at less than 1/2 the price it went for last night. Here's the one item I won (happily) last night: http://rmyauctions.com/ItemImages/000002/2945a_lg.jpeg |
Can't find the "Like" button.
Thanks, Scott. Penny just dropped that the Conerly image is indeed his '50 Bowman card. Thanks for pointing that out. Am partial to that set as it was my birth year. Agreed on the the killer tomatoes of yesteryear. Lots of glamour and style that's missing today. My two cents adjusted for inflation. Quote:

Picked up this Zach Wheat the day after he got his 2000th hit. Bid on a couple others that were over my head.

Incredible pick ups! Another fantastic auction...well done by all.

Congrats. If I had unlimited money, but could only buy one picture in the auction, it would've been that one. Just spectacular. Mark |

Very nice picture. I considered bidding, but decided against it, as I own the Gehrig portrait, that matches the Ruth, you are referring to. They are both beautiful pictures. Congrats on the pickup, Mark Joey, Is that Bugsy Siegel in the last photo? If not, who is it? Looks really familiar to me. Great Ruth family shot, as well. |

I was shut out for the most part, but managed to pick up 3 photos. My favorite is this Herman Seid original of Bob Feller, the night of Cleveland's first-ever night game.
I really liked the contrast of the black background against Feller's white uniform and blaring lights. The photographer really got his point across  |

The other photo I loved (with similar contrast) was this epic image of Satchel Paige, pitching in his Big League debut.
Kinda wish I went harder after this one, given its importance... Did anybody here get it? :o |
Way to go Bob, I was under bidder on Matty :(
|
Thanks Mark. Yes, both photos are beautiful but I love the large size of the 1926 portrait and the detail seen on his jersey. Taken just before he became a superstar in his prime playing years!

David, there is a great Dizzy Dean Van Oeyeon photo in Legendary (yes, it is mine) that is gorgeous that you might want to take a look at. Thanks Greg for not going harder, it was a nail biter for me :) Ben, another fabulous Ruth to your already phenomenal collection Bryan, that Gehrig is an awesome addition, congrats! Mark, the Feller is is off the charts, that is a photo that you can hang on your wall and call it art. I wanted the Paige but fell short as My funds were intent on the Matty only. Kenny, great photo of Zach There are aome great photos in Legendary that I have my eye on and fortunately I do not have to wait long for it to close. |
Bryan,
Like I said. Both are beauties. Also you may be making an incorrect assumption, but they are both 7x9. The Ruth and the one I have were both taken prior to the 1927 WS. It's a great addition to your collection. Mark, That is a really cool Feller. You could frame it up with a ticket from the event if you can find it. Bob, I hear you. Very wise choice on your part. |
"I wanted the Paige but fell short as My funds were intent on the Matty only."
Bob: I sorta think you did ok. That Matty photo might even be a decent compliment to your Ad Sign. After the Joe Jax and now this monumental Matty, I don't see how you can possibly top that in Legendary. But very eager to see what's next! |
"That is a really cool Feller. You could frame it up with a ticket from the event if you can find it."
Thanks Mark... That's a great idea I hadn't even thought of. A new mission... Seems like a tough one, but I love the challenge! |

Talking about the ones that got away. I missed out on this because it wasn't in the Lou Gehrig search button Rhys had on the left hand side. (Very Bad Boy Rhys:mad:)
I would've definitely gone after this one. It sold for a steal I think($450) |

Thanks.... and same to you! I really admired yours, but am sure glad we went after separate Fellers without driving each other up. Hey, did you happen to snag that cool image of Vandy gripping the baseball? Especially since it's from '38, I thought of you when I saw it! |
Quote:
I don't know if you are aware, but Herman Seid was actually trained in photography by Van Oeyen and was his successor as sports photographer at The Cleveland Press. He had some serious chops himself when it came to photography, and to my eye, his "style" in many cases closely resembles Van Oeyen's (not surprising). Sadly, he moved away from sports photography in the 1950's, though he still did human interest and regular news assignments for The Press up to his death in 1980. |
That is some great info on Seid, and enables me to appreciate/enjoy the Bob Feller night photo even more....
Thank you, Lance! |

I didn't go after the Vandy grip photo because I already own the image. ;) I'm glad we went after different Feller Images too, FWIW. It worked out well! |
Stan Musial 3000 Hit photo
1 Attachment(s)
Was happy that I was able to pick up this milestone of Stan the Man at 2nd base after hitting his pinch hit double on May 13, 1958 at Wrigley Field. The Cardinals management wanted to save Stan for the next day return trip to St Louis for Musial to reach this milestone, but his pinch hit double was needed to win the final series game against the Cubbies. All I need now is the ticket stub to this game to add to my photo and neatly scored scorecard that I picked up a few years ago. Phil

As the word "iconic" is being mentioned in another thread, I can say that this image isn't iconic. But it is a very nice photo from a mere month after his first MLB game. |
Who won this photo?! Contact me..plzz.. It went more than I expected.. i tried. :(
