Willie Mays Skateboard

one of my favorite all time pieces...made by Union Surfer in the early 1960s. All things considered, mine is in pretty good shape. To my knowledge, no other player had his own skateboard :D

I do not have the big one shown in the last photo....these things don't turn up every day! :(

That is awesome and very cool. I saw one at the National a number of years ago but they are very tough to find. I like the Willie Mays sun glasses as well.

Rob,
Very cool! Who knew Willie was a skateboarder in his time off from baseball? LOL Anything for a buck...

Check out the old clay wheels.
Those and the dreaded steel skateboard and skate wheels were the only options back then for those of you that aren't old enough to remember back that far.

Very cool! I have always liked those boards and hope to stumble across one, one day....but it would be unlikely.

When I was taking pictures, I noticed how damn dry this thing is. I'd like to maybe oil it but that's probably not possible without darkening the veneer......any ideas?

I don't think Murphy's Oil Soap would darken it...I'd try a small spot on the bottom first though.

Oh my gosh, amazin' Rob!

Great piece! Has the look and feel of a custom Vic Wertz I made.

Murphy's says not to use on unfinished wood. I used a teeny bit of Pledge. I could almost hear the wood thanking me. :D

I hate you ;). Yours in in stellar condition!

I have the glasses, too, but never knew or noticed the writing came in two different colors. You see the glasses about as often as you see the skateboard

You can also put it in a room with a humidifier in it for a few days

jimm 02-25-2014 01:48 PM

What year are the glasses and board?

1964, maybe. That was the year Jan and Dean sang "Sidewalk Surfin'"

jimm 02-26-2014 01:34 PM

I have the '10 and '11 boards. Too bad they stopped, a cool SGA.

Thanks. Is that a postcard I see, lower left? Don't think I've seen one before.

How long ago did you get the sunglasses? It's been awhile since I've seen any.

I might be wrong, but it looks like MAY be a trimmed Dexter Press
photo affixed to a 1969 FDC (first day cover)???

sayhey24 02-27-2014 05:43 PM

Yes, it is a 1969 first day cover. I'm not home right now to look at it, but I'm almost certain the photo is printed or screened onto the envelope, not affixed.
