Best of 1970 Topps
 

List (highly encouraged to post pics) your top 5. The criteria of your selection is up to you (photo, great season, error, first card, favorite player, etc.).

We'll do each year starting from 1980 to 1952. I'll start a new year about once a week. I'll close voting a month or 2 after the first post of the thread and tally up the results.

With these basic rules...
1. You can only vote for a player's card twice during his entire run (Let's not make this a Mantle and Ryan love fest). Consider that when making your selections.

2. Provide a reason for each choice if you're the first person making that selection. You are encouraged, but it's not necessary to restate the point if someone already said it.

3. Pick only 5. We are going through 29 years, limiting to only Topps regular releases, tough decisions will be made. List honorable mentions if you desire, but they will not be counted in the final tally.

Always loved this set. I think it's mostly from nostalgia. This was a year that was plentiful in my neighborhood in the early 80's. It was vintage to me.

Looking over the set, it's kind of boring from a photo viewpoint. Good photos, just the same headshot, pose, or bat rack shot throughout the set.

Let me make this clear. The 1970 set is an abomination!!!!! Drab, colorless gray images with a lack of any action...just a yawnfest.

But then we saw the images of the '69 Mets all over the place, so my friends and I learned to love it!!!

1. Look at that number 1 card proclaiming "World Champions"!!!! That was a wet dream for me and my Queens brethren...although we were only little boys at the time.

2. Mazeroski's card is just a pretty cool shot, showing a joyful player in a very engaging layout.

3. Aaron, although he looks somewhat surprised, exudes such a boyish charm.

4 & 5. Gaze upon the pair of right handed Mets fireballers mowing down the Braves on the way to the championship. Awesome!!!!!!!!!

1. Why is one of President Nixon's secret service agents disguised as a Phillies player at Shea Stadium??

2. Okay, Ken, keep that pose...perfect...oh wait, let's move this other fellah in a little closer and capture the beauty of his elbow.

3. Say hey, um, what's up with your face?? Spending a little cash on 'tan in a can'??

I like this Tom Seaver.

As a Mets fan growing up in Northern NJ in the 70's, it was all about the Mets!

Todd---as far as I have ever seen, that is right. Those are the only 2 player cards. I think some checklists as well

1) AL Playoffs Game 2 - Look at that acrobatic Boog Powell!

2) Al Oliver - Like that card with the rookie trophy

3) Sam McDowell All Star card - I've always loved the all-star cards and as an Indians fan this is the one.

4) Roberto Clemente - This my first Clemente entry. Had to get this one in.

5) Mark Belanger - I like this card of one of the best defensive SS of the era.

Without going into specific cards, I have to say that along with 65, this is my favorite set. I feel that 69 and 70 topps have the best backs from this era. Also you don't have the pricy Mantle card to deal with. High Numbers can be a little tough, without being too scarce. Munson Rookie and a few other star cards to sink your teeth into. Really a good mix of some older stars with a new generation of players ( Bench, Carlton, Jackson, Ryan, Palmer, etc ) I know this set gets killed, but I've always liked it for some reason.
