Is This A Bad One - Mantle RC?

Check out this listing. Card seems off to me. Slab seems tragic. Thoughts? 'Cause someone might get screwed on this to a four digit tune.

Mantle?

bnorth 02-11-2014 08:56 PM

The same seller has a Clemente that the slab looks just as bad for tampering and is not even the right slab for the card.LOL After a second look at the Mantle the back of the card is also printed upside down compared to a real one.

Wihawk 02-11-2014 08:59 PM

WOW! That case sure looks tampered with and the colors on the card don't look good but I'm no expert.

Ben is right. The Mantle is flipped...and this is a fake or reprint. Undecided whether this is a real holder and the seller cracked & submitted a reprint or a fake altogether.

Either way, stay away. Good catch Ben.

Why is it all the scammers ALWAYS have a reference to where they got the card? It always comes from Grandpa or been in the family or whatever...to me, that is a massive red flag. Nevermind the complete destruction around the holder...lol...

bnorth 02-11-2014 09:56 PM

Seller is 100% a scammer. I have been eBay messaging with them. Says he got the cards from his Dad when he was 9 and is now 25. The problem is the Clemente is graded a 8.5 and half point grading was not around 16 years ago.

MattyC 02-11-2014 10:06 PM

If these lowlives put half the energy into getting proper jobs, they might be able to get a real card to sell. Karma's a boomerang, though, so it'll come back.

Meantime how do we get these taken down? Will eBay take our word they are fugazi?

Harliduck 02-11-2014 10:14 PM

Gotta love this. I asked him why the card back was reversed and why the holder looks like it has so much damage...here is his reply -

I honestly don't know the answer to either. my dad bought a collection when I was a kid. I cherry picked them and took the best.

I am completely ignorant to all thing spirts cards related. I was expecting 20 30 bucks for this one. shows how much I know.

Not a bad profit for expecting 30 bucks...WOW. I hope this gets pulled. I reported it. I suggest others do as well.

So who is saying the card is fake and the psa label is fake, run the barcode with psa and the serial number, see what the it comes up as, would anyone take a good mantle bowman out of the holder to sell a fake?, it is worth it in the holder, the label and serial is more pertinent than the card at this point.

I am saying the cards in the holders now are not the ones that left PSA in those slabs. The Mantle is a reprint or counterfeit card.

The Clemente does not even have the right size PSA holder for that year card.

The bar code and PSA label could be real, but are meaningless when the slab has been cracked and a different card inserted.

People have been cracking open PSA holders and replacing the card inside with a lower grade/counterfeit/reprint cards since PSA started grading cards.
The reason is to scam people out of $. There are several versions of this scam.

Someone on the Pre-War side knows who to contact at ebay to get this pulled. I am sure Leon knows as well. I will email him.

After several ebay messages back and forth I basically called him a liar and said it would be a good idea to remove the listings in my last message.

The sellers story was complete BS with an impossible timeline of events.

Harliduck 02-12-2014 04:36 PM

That's funny...I only sent him the one message...he sent me about 5 over a two hour period. I guess he felt some guilt. It was clear this was TOTAL bs. Glad it was pulled, someone was going to be massively upset.

sycks22 02-12-2014 05:15 PM

We're forgetting the fact that his dad must've been loaded to buy him these cards when he was only 9. When I was 9 I just wanted a Griffey topps card.

hammer 02-12-2014 06:37 PM

Ethans at it again has 1955 8.5 Roberto Clemente listed again.

Yes I see the POS relisted the Mantle also. I see I am on his blocked list now because I tried to message him about it.

Reported both cards to eBay, probably won't help but can't hurt.

vintagebaseballcardguy 02-12-2014 06:57 PM

I will turn it in, too. Might even contact the dude...

vintagebaseballcardguy 02-12-2014 07:07 PM

I reported it. I also messaged him and told him to stop shaming himself and pull that reprint off. I am so sick of these scammers! In the last few months, I can't remember how many such frauds have been exposed on here. It isn't any of my business, but I just have my bucket full! Whatever happened to integrity?!

Here is an older thread showing some other PSA fakes (most all are better than this 51 Mantle and 55 Clemente) that have been offered up for sale and caught by other posters here.

http://www.net54baseball.com/showthr...=110921&page=2

Obviously, some of these examples are at least 6 years old, but are still more sophisticated than the Mantle/Clemente from this seller....one of the fake cases in this thread even has a fake barcode on it(post 18). No excuses for any barcodes on the fake cases not to scan and match the serial number as there are websites such at the one below to create (or in my case verify) a barcode. I would guess that the creator of the 64 Mantle PSA 9 card in the old thread has evolved his craft and likely would not make the same error with the barcode not matching the serial number.

http://barcode.tec-it.com/

For PSA serial numbers use the Code 2of5 interleaved
