1910 Old Mill Advertising Piece?
4 Attachment(s)
Did someone get a steal of a deal on this?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/141184614927...84.m1435.l2649 The seller said it was from 1910's. It went too cheap if it is in fact a 1910 Old Mill ad with Shoeless Joe and Ty Cobb... |
It appears to me to be the advertising piece for the premiums . Not much to it I think . Maybe others will weigh in .

Oops !
My mistake , I didn't catch the " Group Picture " part . I thought it was just referring to the Old Mill Cabinets . Does anyone know what those Groups could be ?
|
I'm not sure what this is? Could be an advertisement for Old Mill cigs that depicts some of the stars of the game...not representative of any specific cards they distributed.
It's interesting? Certainly worth the $28 risk someone got it for!!!! Due to the lack of response...I'd guess many are scrambling to figure out how they missed this!!!!1:p |
Yea, i dont know how I missed that, I hope it pans out for whoever got it. yolo right
|
It DOES look artificially aged to me, though?!
Funny how so many of these "old" pieces have had coffee/tea spilled all over them at some time...as if someone used it as a coaster!!!! |
I don't think it is an Old Mill piece at all. Pictorial News Co. made current events posters that are relatively easy to find. Lots of baseball and other sports. It looks like a poster of theirs with an Old Mill contest advertisement on it.
|
Maybe it could have been for a contest for a T200 Large Premium?
btw, 100 million people on ebay and the one item I win gets posted on the board. What are the chances? |

Nah. $88 was going to be my bid. Its a cool piece. Nice Leon |
I was watching it too but I couldn't tell if it was some type of magazine page that was torn out of something or an independent advertising piece.

Good stuff, Peter :D - I have never used a snipe service, so probably should look into it, but I sort of enjoy the manual snipe... more organic approach if you will. There is a certain rush, knowing I can pop a number in there and snipe it all on my own. The truth was I was considering $200, but then got cold feet thinking it was a Pictorial News piece, but of course confusion sets in with the OM quote on the front, so $127 would have been my real bid. :p Seriously... I thought this piece may go for several hundred considering Joe and Ty were on there with the Old Mill Cig advertising, but I just am not sure that this was 1910 ad piece. Possibly much later?? The cool part is being able to send off for a group picture. The question is what group picture? (Perhaps the same one that is being showed in the ad piece? Mystery... |
It was done by Pictorial New Service of NY. It came in today and is 12 x 18 and blank backed. The paper is a heavy clay coated type. I would call it an ad poster. I valued it more than others did....It will be fun to research too. My guess is it is circa 1915....could be a few years earlier but it's not a given. It is definitely a real and authentic piece. My high snipe is in red and I think it's that kind of value....but maybe not?

I swear I have seen something like this before but cannot remember where...not Old Mill but with other advertising and players (with action photos?)...I am sure there were Fatima ones from Pictoral News Service that showed teams (like the Cubs and A's) and action photos...gotta search the archives.

Leon, very cool piece, you got a heck of a deal imo, I would put the value around what your max bid was and that may be being conservative to be honest.
Here is a similar type piece that I sold through Heritage this past year. Rariden and Perdue date this one to around 1912-13 as that is when they played together. The piece was also made by the Pictoral News Co. My piece sold for less than I was happy with but yours is much more interesting with the offer on front, etc. http://sports.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleN...#1054810548591 |
BTW I'll take a stab at the identifications (I wonder what photo I will get when I send it in to the company? :) )
1. Konetchy 2. Johnson 3. ** 4. O'Toole 5. Russ Ford 6. Jackson 7. Rucker 8. Cobb 9. Eddie Collins 10. Zimmerman 11. Fromme 12. Wiltse The ad states "Speaker" as one of the guys but the guy in #3 isn't Speaker, he looks more like Charley Hall to me but I haven't confirmed it. Maybe that is why it was "hard" because they gave you wrong info. |
Sniping at over $500 and winning for under $30 is a good day! ;)

Pictorial News inserts

Hi Leon,
Here's 3 similar ones I have in my collection. They all say Pictorial News, and advertise Piedmont or Old Mill Cigarettes. |
1913
The New York Yankee piece appears to be from 1913, when Chance became mgr and Williams, Cook and Maisel were new arrivals.

Pictorial News
Yes, some sort of poster, insert or ad. They are on a heavy paper but not like a card stock. Perhaps they were newspaper inserts. I'm sure somebody else here can help identify the correct year. Were they all from 1913?
