Previously unseen pennant
1 Attachment(s)
As a Giants collector with over 200 (mostly vintage) pennants, it's rare I see one I've never seen before. Pictured is one such pennant. It's rough, yes, but I had to jump on it. Has anyone seen this same style for another team? Would you think a star player (e.g. Mays) would have gone in the cutout or was it perhaps for a picture of little Johnny or Sally??
the opening is 4.25" x 6" |
I seem to remember a Yankee pennant when I was a kid with a team picture inserted in a similar spot though the opening was horizontal rather than vertical. Maybe in the 1960's sometime but I could be totally wrong.

I'm almost certain this is a player pennant from the 1960's. I have never seen a Giants player pennant but I have either seen or have players from the Twins, Packers, North Stars, Angels, A's, Dodgers, Tigers and Cubs. I'm sure there are others out there as well. They were made in Winona, Minnesota during the 1960's through the mid 1970's. The majority of the player pennants you see are Minnesota Twins players.

Somewhat similar Angels pennant

I've seen these somewhat similar Angels pennants.

Definitely a star player or at least a starter's picture would have filled that void.... Mays, McCovey, Hart, Alou, Davenport, Marichal, Perry and the like...
Must've had a very limited production run for so few of these to survive. Doesn't it suck when you have virtually everything? Then you resort to finding pieces literally with holes in them, just to add something new! :o |
Hey Mark. Have you ever seen any Reds players used for these pennants?

Albie Pearson, huh? Not proud to say, I had to look him up. Pretty unimpessive stats to win a ROY  although he did later lead the league in caught stealings! P.S. Could you maybe post a pic of the reverse? |

I've never seen any of the individual Reds Players in this style of Pennant. Just the full-sized 1960s pennants with entire Team Picture. How about you? I would think that if they existed, they would include players like Rose, Perez, May, Pinson, Edwards, Helms, Harper, Ruiz, Cardenas, McRae, Maloney, etc. The era just prior to Big Red Machine... probably just before Bench. Wishful thinking of course... I doubt these even exist :( |
Reggie
I thought I'd post one a acquired a while back. Same pic as on the 69' button.

Yaz, from same series...
|
The Aaron has the same slant to the opening (as did the Pearson on pg. 1) :D
Are the Banks and Clemente full size? |
Yaz, cubs power Banks and Reggie are obviously the same series....but not the same series as my Giants.
|
Mark,
I've never seen any Reds players from that era but I sure would like to! |
Rob.... That's right (I should have been more specific)
Chris... They must have never been produced for Cincy (we would've seen something by now  ) |

The Blue Ernie Banks is just under 14" in length
The Red Ernie Banks is 20" in length Interestingly, these next two Cubs variations feature similar graphics to the 20" (Red) Ernie Banks. But I believe these are both full-sized 29" pennants. I am 99% sure of it, despite Legendary neglecting to mention the size in their description... http://www.legendaryauctions.com/Lot...entoryid=21200 |

That was the Reggie Jackson that I had as well and I sold the Albie Pearson and two other Angels pennants about a month ago on eBay. I will post pictures of a few different ones when I get a chance.

All of the player photo pennants that I have seen have been the mid size 20 or so inch pennant. I have not seen a full size player photo pennant made by the company in Winona, Minnesota.

P.S. my ebay seller says he bought the Giants example NEW and it never had a picture . The seller lives in MN. |

Here is the Ron Santo 14 inch version which I sold around 8 months ago. I know there is a Billy Williams version of this as well.

This is getting very interesting (at least for me :D). My Giants pennant is soft felt and fullsized. The seller originally said he got in 1982. I emailed him again and here's the full story:
"The pennant is from the 1950's or 1960's it was in a storage room at WinCraft in Winona, MN. I received it from a relative who was cleaning out an old store room. I received it in 1982 but it is much much older. The other pennants with that look are from the late 1950's and early 1960's. For example I've seen a MN Twins pennant w/ a Harmon Killabrew card in it." Mark (perezfan) told me he equates Wincraft with stiff modern pennants (as did I) but the company has apparently been around since 1961. One more thing....the pennant below looked full size to me but it is 20". I'm pretty stoked to have maybe the only full size player photo pennant (prototype, perhaps?) One more, more thing....I usually only see Giants pennants. It would be nice to have a thread where we all compare the similar pennant themes used by multiple teams.... |

I threw in a Mays pic from one of the souvenir photo packs the Giants used to sell. The earlier pics were b&w and may be more appropriate but the pics say "Willie Mays, Giants" and the "Giants" seems a bit redundant. This particular pic is just a test - I'm not thrilled, in that Willie is a TAD too tall. Also, attached is a pic I found that shows the reverse of a Yankees team photo pennant.
