Topps Cards that never were
There is a great blog on this topic and he has some great work.
http://cardsthatneverwere.blogspot.com/ He's showing some great cards that he and others have made of final cards of the big stars. If you like this type of thing, I highly recommend it |
I was honored
to see that he used one of my articles as the inspiration.

I really like '55 Topps so I'd have loved to seen a Mantle and Musial in that set originally.

What would a 52 topps Satchel Paige single print high number 408 go for????? (with one black star).

Wow!
Thanks for sharing this link. I had no idea this guy was displaying some of my creations. It's wonderful that he ascribes credit to each artist.

Card that was anf then was not
This is my favorite, compliments of Bob Lemke, because this card ( Topps 1958 # 145) does show up on the actual checklist on card 44 ( Senators team card), but then is gone on card 134 ( Phillies team card) of the 1958 set. It was pulled after the player got into some legal difficulties. No known examples of an original are known

This ran on my blog late last year . . .
I've updated my 1958 Ed Bouchee custom Attachment 128246 Nearly two years ago I created a custom 1958 Topps-style card of Ed Bouchee, filling a gap that Topps had created when it checklisted, but never printed a 1958 card for the Phillies first baseman. While I was basically satisfied with my creation, I was always somewhat dissatisfied with having had to use the photo from the 1960 Topps Bouchee card. Some months ago I found a great team-issued posed portrait photo of Bouchee and decided to have another go at a 1958. While I could have simply replaced the player picture on my black-background earlier card, I decided to explore options. In the 1958, Topps used five different background colors on its Phillies cards: light blue, blue, black, orange and yellow. I chose yellow for my new Bouchee. While looking over original 1958 Phillies cards I noticed for the first time that Topps used four different versions of the team name, apparently depending on the length of the position designation that shares the bottom color bar. The team can be found as PHILA. PHILS., PHILA. PHILLIES, PHILADELPHIA PHILS., or PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES. This should conclude my efforts at adding Ed Bouchee to the 1958 Topps issue. Bob, I like the first one better, because the photograph fits with the rest of the 1958 set.
I am also disappointed I am no longer able to buy your creations. I understand your reasons, just disappointed. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Couple Quick memories
The 1962 Jackie Jensen is there because in the early hobby days when I was working on a 62 Topps Master set, I was trying to guess which cards were printed and missing. For whatever reason Jensen has stuck with me as a card I always wanted to see.
And in the original article it is mentioned that Jim Wynn is in there as my choice That is because before Cesar Cedeno he was my favorite player growing up. Yes I was an Astros fan stuck in New Jersey, no wonder I moved to Texas |
Where's my Mark Fidrych '76? The Bird was the word in '76 !! Even started the all-star game and didn't even rate a rookie card. To a 10 year-old in Detroit I can tell you it was a major disappointment that summer!
My dad actually took this photo on an assignment for a magazine that summer. It comes from a slide which is what I think Topps actually used to use. http://i811.photobucket.com/albums/z...ps0b7ec11d.jpg |
Brent, I recently resumed sales of my custom cards. See my blog entry from earlier this week.

Me too...wow. I remember this theme being discussed here before. Topp's policy of refusing to make a card of anyone not on a roster stunk. Robbed us of many cards of some great players in their last year. Would have loved 76 Killebrew, 67 Koufax, 75 Kaline, ect. ect... Being a 66 Topps guy it always bothered me there was no Steve Carlton, he got skipped. And could you imagine if there was 67 Topps high number Seaver/Ryan card? |
