Topps Total Baseball
When I was collecting as a kid in the 50s and early 60s I lived in St Louis and was a Cardinals fan. I often wished Topps would issue cards of all the Cardinal players on the team in a given year. Starting in 2002 and continuing through 2005 Topps did issue sets that tended to include virtually every player on each team. The first Topps total set in 2002 , and the one in 2003, were 990 cards. In 2004 the set dropped to 880 and to 770 in 2005. They were then discontinued. I guess there was little demand for such large sets with so many commons. I do have them all and they take up some space :)

Al, I would give a $100 just to 'see' your card lair.

There was a nice collector demand
The problem with Total and with UD40 was the production costs were high and without a ton of inserts not enough profit. I think done right there is still room for sets like that.

Interesting...
That's an interesting insight Rich. Never really think about the profitability of printing a set like that but it makes complete sense. Lots of photos and stat backs to compose. More press sheets, more paper.
Maybe if it were done in the style of 1941 Double Play it could work? |
