1916 New York Giants Player Trophy....

3 Attachment(s)
...to pitcher Fred Anderson, for helping set a team record at the time of 17 straight wins, of which Anderson was credited with 4, while some joker named Mathewson only got 1 of the 17. Of course that was Christy's final season and his arm was dead, but I'm sure he got one of these trophies as well, pretty cool..

So I could find only one other of these that went in Leland's back in 2007:

As, you can see mine is in need of a face lift to say the least, so I'm in need of opinions. Thanks to fellow Net54er Mike for letting me know these can be silver re-plated. Never knew that of trophies.

So after calling around and getting quotes I can do a total silver replating & restoration for about $350-$400 (not sure I want to spend that much), or I could get a general cleaning and the base refinished for $130, but it won't have that new shine and will look more pewter/gray.

Any thoughts?

Ok...to me this is an investment grade piece. The silver looks like it's completely gone other than the crest...agreed? I would have silver restoration guys pull off the crest, re-silver the cup, re-attach the crest. You can remove the wood base, paint it black, re-attach it.

Shoeless Moe 12-23-2013 02:36 PM

Thanks Mike

What also is pretty cool is underneath the cup is stamped "Makers, Dieges & Clust."

Wiki:

"Dieges & Clust were jewelers established in 1898 by Col. Charles J. Dieges and Prosper Clust.

They produced many medals, including the Spanish-American War Medal, the 1904 Olympic Medal, The Eagle Scout medal (from 1916–1920), the Medal of Honour, and the Titanic-Carpathia Medals (at the request of "The Unsinkable" Mrs. Molly Brown). They made baseball's first Most Valuable Player Awards and many Baseball Press Pins as well as Lou Gehrig's farewell plaque.

They also cast the Heisman Trophy (in New York and later Providence, Rhode Island) from its inception in 1935 through late 1979 when the company was sold to Herff Jones (a division of Carnation) on January 1, 1980.

Perhaps the height of Dieges & Clust's production were the 1920s trophies known in sports collecting circles as "The Five Figural Spalding Baseball Trophies". The various trophies depict a baseball player pitching, catching, batting, playing first base, or playing in the outfield. The proportions of the figures and the detail (of the faces, fingers, stitching in the baseball gloves and shoelaces) are remarkable. They fetch up to $5,000 at auction, relatively high for a silver-plated trophy on a wooden base."

It was on eBay, I saw it the other day but passed over it because I thought it was ugly.

I'm sure restoration would require removing the cup from the base. How do you think they are connected? Can't tell due to the felt bottom.

Fascinating piece. I wonder if Fred painted the base?

perezfan 12-24-2013 07:40 AM

There's normally a simple screw/bolt mechanism. Pretty easy to separate the two, once you have it in-hand...

There's either a rod that goes through the cup itself or one attached to the bottom of the cup. There should be a hole through the center of the base (covered by the felt) and the rod is connected to the base with a hex nut.

Should be very simple to remove from the base.

That's a super item. Normally I would say to leave it alone, but in this case I think it's a great idea to restore it. What a great piece!

Cleaned up pretty well....

now if only this was Matty's instead of Fred Anderson's, but still pretty cool. Sucker is heavy too.

Nice work. Looks terrific!

Who did the restoration? (if you don't mind divulging...)

mjkm90 01-18-2014 06:34 PM

Fantastic job!!! So glad you restored it!

Shoeless Moe 01-18-2014 06:37 PM

International Silver in Glencoe, IL

All they did was clean it, nothing was added to it, all original.

I was going to get it silver replated, but the guy said don't bother, looks great just after a good cleaning.

Runscott 01-18-2014 06:59 PM

Beautiful trophy!

Scott Garner 01-18-2014 07:03 PM

What did they do to the base? It looked green / now looks brownish.

Did they just strip/sand off the green paint? Or maybe it wasn't really green before, and perhaps an illusion?

Yep, the base was originally wood colored (I wanted it to look like the day the Giants re'cd them in June of 1916) and someone painted it green, like someone said, maybe Fred, maybe someone since. But yah he removed the green paint, or 98% of it, and the rest is magic.

I can not recommend this place enough. He really takes pride in his work and it obviously shows...Net54er Mike recommended him.

Owner to Buyer

I am known as Sugarroll on eBay, and I am the one who sold this trophy to Paul.

I just yesterday was curious about the destiny of this wonderful trophy.

I am thrilled for what has happened to this trophy!

I am thrilled that you made good money on it!

GREAT! GREAT! GREAT!
