My 5877 snipe didn't register :).

WillowGrove 12-14-2013 11:02 AM

No but it was fun to watch the last minute. Hey at least you tried Chris.

Joe_G. 12-14-2013 11:03 AM

I was first bidder and hoped to be the last, but my snipe fell a bit short and like Leon, didn't even register.

scooter729 12-14-2013 11:28 AM

Chalk me up as another $3500 snipe which never went off. I thought when it stayed at $800 for a while that there might be a chance, but didnt have too much hope.

h2oya311 12-14-2013 11:38 AM

Kalamazoo

My $6,870 snipe didn't register either. I figured money could be made up to $7,750. It wouldn't be worth the trouble much past that...although there is still some profit potential for the winner if he's able to get preferred AH rates (i.e., a cut of the buyers premium).

Was floored to see it out there on eBay when looking yesterday! I'm sure the seller was quite pleased with the hammer price!!

bcbgcbrcb 12-14-2013 12:28 PM

I guess I'm in the minority and don't collect these so admittedly don't know much about them but the card doesn't look legitimate to me.

Bicem 12-14-2013 12:45 PM

Had the same feeling Phil. Never owned one though.

canjond 12-14-2013 01:44 PM

$7k snipe was not enough.

cockrellcollection 12-14-2013 02:02 PM

Looks like somebody has a nice one to add to the best pickups of 2013 thread!

I saw the card on eBay a couple days ago and wondered if it was real. Another copy of the card sold for $13K at REA earlier this year. I know several of the posters in this thread are far more knowledgeable than I am, but I was shocked that a card like that would show up raw on eBay.

philliesphan 12-14-2013 05:01 PM

Seemed rather legitimate to me

My snipe, alas, also did not register.

I don't have any of the Team Cards myself, just a lone KBat cabinet team card [e.g. slightly larger]

Have no memory of it Tom:(

Do you remember the year you bought it?

autograf 12-15-2013 06:20 AM

Circa 1994-1995-1996. It was from a typed sale list....3-4 pages. Bought that and another card for about $4K or so. Can't remember the other card though...it was about G to GVG overall but nice picture.

Joe_G. 12-15-2013 06:47 AM

This auction did have some red flags but I believe the card to be real and someone got a good, not great, deal. There have been some superior examples that have surfaced. The known population of the Detroit K-Bats cards (to me) has doubled in the last couple years (3 => 6) and they nearly all have amazing photo quality. The 1887 Detroit team photo utilized is also fairly common in that Frank Tomlinson (Tomlinson Studio) sold it in many different formats. Tomlinson marketed the Championship team pic Nationally through newspaper ads and must have produced a healthy quantity, many of which have stood the test of time.

Congrats to the new owner.

Looks like Keith Olbermann won it.

There were a lot of really good things on those sales lists, stuff that was so much easier to find back then. And I could sell multi-thousand dollar items without even showing a picture. Now you can't even sell a ten dollar card without a high- res scan.

Just not much trust out there anymore, this has permeated through society as a whole. So many scams in all walks of life, who the heck can you trust anymore? Its so sad, man.

Not completely...recently a lady contacted me about a 1950s Lincoln Chiefs baseball jersey that her brother had...she lives in Arizona, and I live in Nebraska, I told her I would buy it if it was authentic, she sent it to me and told me to send her a check when I get it. I advertise for buying postcards on Craigslist, some guy in Kansas saw my ad and sent me over 1,000 postcards through the mail to make an offer on...I got them, made an offer and he rejected it, so I sent them back. These were people who didn't know me at all...I'm not so sure I would do the same thing they did.

Love those team cards

Did not know about this auction on ebay. Own two team cards athletics and boston. So rare to see one on ebay. Would love to own the set but the rest come up so infrequently. My real desire is a peck & snyder cdv or large but those also are rare at auction.

At first I was going to ask how you knew it was him, then I did a little aggregate research. You are correct. Awesome pickup Mr. Olbermann.

Leon 12-16-2013 08:07 AM

I am in agreement with Joe....good buy but not a great buy. Nice photo with a bit more creasing than the other few I found online, but also a bit less $$ too.

dbrown 12-16-2013 07:12 PM

I've never seen one in person -- a question for those who have: is the reflectiveness of this one, in bright light, typical of KBs?

thanks
David

Yes, that is exactly how that type of card should look.
