1920 W519 - Cravath #18 Variation Confirmation
 

I was trying to find out what card I had from a lot that I recently purchased and saw that the Old Cardboard site has a W519 Num2 variation sub-set. The footnote states that the Cravath card should be #18, but that it had not been confirmed.

I have one ;)

Interestingly, the unnumbered card shows him as "Gabby Cravath". His real name is Gavvy Cravath. This variation below lists him as "Gobby Cravath". I'm not sure if the standard Cravath W519 #3 has this same mistake (Gobby vs Gabby vs Gavvy).

Anyway, I'm sure this won't make it to the top of the "discovery of the year" list, but I'm mildly pleased. ;)

The "discovery" gets love from this corner. Neat card!! I did some quick searches and it looks like the numbered set is far more scarce than the unnumbered one. Does anyone have a regular W519 numbered Cravath they can show, or is this the first one we have seen?

Great find! Probably my favorite part of collecting cards is when a new variation is discovered for the first time. It's always sort of amazing to me when sets that have been collected and studied for sometimes 100+ years turn up entirely new cards. Anytime I get cards new to my collection, I thoroughly scan them to see if there's anything different or unique. I think that the strip card sets, by their nature, will probably offer tons of new variations like these. Anyway, congrats on this discovery!

Cool find, hope you get the answer you're looking for. I have a handful of strip cards, maybe 50 or so, but I bought almost all of them in two lots real cheap and never really looked into the sets

I have no idea if this helps at all, but I had a Gobby Cravath with a different number on it several years ago. I sold it to a dealer on Cape Cod and unfortunately, I never kept a scan. I posted it when I found it, but I used the temporary picture hosting option on the old Net54, so the scan no longer appears. Here is my thread where FKW in particular provides very detailed information. Nice find!

Here's my W519 Cravath run (technically, I guess I need the W521 also). Unfortunately, for my Type 2 copy, it's very unclear what the second letter is, but it seems to be more like an "A" then the "O."

Nice Gary...I was aware of your E107 collection, but never knew you had such an extensive Cravath Strip Card collection. You've been holding out on us!!

So it looks like the "Gobby" is new info, but #18 was already known/confirmed. It's debatable whether yours shows Gabby vs Gobby. I think my example makes it obvious.

Thanks, Derek, but I think that's Gary P. w/ the incredible E107 collection. I've never owned one yet, but hope to one day. I think my T2 is a Gabby, so I think you have an "error" card. Maybe they corrected the spelling in later releases.

Gavvy had a successful post baseball career. He got into real estate in CA and became a judge in Laguna Beach, where he passed in the early '60's. Fared much better than a lot of his contemporaries. He has an interesting write up on Wikipedia. I believe he was the first major leaguer from the greater San Diego area, being a native of Escondido, CA.

My only Gabby is unnumbered but at least has a wet sheet transfer on back....

I like Gary's ambiguous "A/O" in Gavvy...
