Help in ID'ing a Springfield Ponies* player, if possible?
1 Attachment(s)
I just picked this up because I found it pretty cool and the face looked familiar to me, though I couldn't think of who it was.
Anyone know anything about this, or know who this is? Looking forward to reading what "almighty Google" couldn't tell me, :D Thanks in advance all... . |
Not him but resembles Cicotte to me.
|
It's Joe Jackson!
|
Might want to start by identifying the uniform...looks more like a San Francisco Seals uniform than a White Sox uniform but I am no expert...maybe someone else could chime in.

I almost pulled the trigger on this but wasn't comfortable with the description or image. It was cheap enough for the risk but I couldn't identify the player. I was leaning towards it being a Seals PC too.

I don't have a team name for your Nate, but the jerseys match.

Seablaster:
That is the 1909 Springfield MA ponies team. Harl Maggert and Shano Collins are two players of note. |
You all are awesome. The knowledge on here is staggering!
Just tried scouring baseball reference to look at the Springfield Ponies' players who have available pictures, but haven't had any success. This player is about 5'11" - 6'1" tall... |

This picture has been uploaded before to net54, but wanted to put it in this thread. This is the 1905 Springfield Ponies team. Anyone think it resembles any of these players?

Parker
My money is on player # 13 - Parker ....
|
I agree that it is probably Parker.
Interesting to note that the guide photo differs slightly from the postcard though obviously taken at the same time. View Powell (right behind the team owner in the suit) looking to his right in the PC and to his left in the guide pic. |

He kind of looks like this guy (same chin I think) - Murray Parker played for the 1909 Springfield Ponies:
|
Steve, that's a great little project you have going. Wish I had known about it when doing my own research.
Here's another one of Dan O'Neill's teams where I've i.d.'d some of the players. |
and another from about the same period - I haven't been able to nail down the exact year on this one. I think it might have been taken during the Spring, and has some players that got cut.
|
Agreed, it is definitely Murray Parker.
I see me traversing down this road of PCs now, looking for Cubs players before they donned the Cubs uniform. It's all just too intriguing. Thank you all very much, and I'm sure threads like this will help others when they search for info in the future. Steve: really impressive work on that group of photos, thanks for the link. |

My bad - I didn't notice that Don Stokes had already posted above a Spalding Guide version of the photo identifying it as 1908.
Scott - it could be. |
BTW, the player identified in the Guide as Connors (11) middle row far right is Joseph Connor brother of Hall of Famer Roger Connor.
