Tobacco Card/ Pre-War Recommended Reading?
Hey everyone-
I have gotten to the point where I feel I have "run out of internet," regarding info on the early sets and I was wondering if anyone could throw me some book suggestions. I would love to read the "t206 The Monster", but I can't find it any where- any other recommendations that would cover t206, Goudey Issues, Caramels or any pre-war in general? Thanks for the help! bill heitman...who lurks around here...may have copy of the monster for you...additional the 3 book lipset series is good reading of early cards. Also the newer old judge book, there's a cracker jack book that recently came out too.

It isn't about cards, but The Celebrant by Eric Greenberg is a great book about baseball during that time, and Mathewson in particular.

Thanks guys! |
I also recommend Crazy '08 about the 1908 pennant race. Also has some interesting facts about the time. Box Socials is an underrated baseball fun read.

crazy 08 was very enjoyable...i concur.
|
Another good read is "The Black Prince of Baseball: Hal Chase and the Mythology of the Game".
|
My favorite is "more than merkle". It does a great job breaking down the players team by team.

+1 on Crazy '08 as well.
I also enjoyed Harry Hooper An American Baseball Life which focuses on Harry but has great insight into the "times" as well. |
Can someone give me contact info for the old judge book, and the Cracker Jack book? TIA

For the Old Judge book (I hear it is pretty good) email Richard Masson at richard@ponymass.com
