Fake Mantle pin?
http://gspawn.com/shop/
Look under memorabilia and sports. check this out from the Pawn stars, that Mantle day pin looks like a "fake or fantasy" pin. Ive never seen it, has the famous early 50s pose and just random printing. Am I right that its fake? |
Hi Scott,
Sports Collectors Digest did a feature on Mantle collectibles, which included a guide to his pins. Having trouble linking to it now. The guide features an identical pin and indicates that it was likely attached to souvenirs (pennants I believe) and distributes by vendors outside of Yankee stadium. The article suggests the origin is not 100% certain. They are apparently very rare and the article indicates that one sold at auction for $2,000. I don't know enough about pins to determine authenticity but can say that the picture, message, and typeface look spot on. |
Thank you for the info. I have owned the stiff felt 69 pennant , but I have only seen the famous large blue pin, w the sport giveaway folder pose and that one is common and has been faked too .
Im glad its real tho, hate seeing fake stuff on any site that is trying to be reputable. BTW. I love the press pin on there |
For those looking for additional info on oddball Mantle items, the SCD series is available at sportscollectorsdigest.com/mantle. If you follow the link it will give you an option to search for more articles. They cover most his test/oddball Topps issues, postcards, Holiday Inn items, toys and games, pins, photos, and some items from his other business adventures. It is not fully comprehensive but is a great free resource. I am not affiliated with the site but think it is exceptional. If I was to create a HOF for hobbyists, he would probably make the cut.
