Right... seller didn't know what he had. Even with the lackluster listing and understated age, the bidders knew exactly what it was.

What period do you think it is from?

Late Teens... based on the size, graphics and design.

Oversized Pennants didn't quite make it into the 1920s.

Holy moly, Ty Cobb days. What do you think the value is? 5k?

$2,500 ish is a reasonable price for any quality oversized pennant. I like this piece, but I don't looooove it. The Tigers put high quality graphics into many of their pennants, but this one is a bit basic IMO. I'm being super critical, but as a Tigers collector that is my "thing".

Interesting Mike. Did they make pennants such as these in navy?

Also would love to see great other examples of pre 1920 Tigers pennants if possible.

Here's another Oversized teens example with a Tiger Mascot clearly modeled after Ty Cobb. Note the unmistakeable traits...

His smart-ass grin
His split-handed grip on the bat
The Bat's taped handle, a la Cobb

I'm not sure if I ever commented on this particular pennant before, but if you didn't know this:

Swayne Field was located in Toledo, Ohio and was the former home of the Toledo Mud Hens.

Overland Co. was a precursor to Jeep which is also based in Toledo, OH.

Spectacular Mark. Like the purple example even more.
And the Ty Cobb tiger is awesome

I did have that info on Swayne Field and the Overland Company (thanks to a great Net54 thread a few years ago). For 2 years, Overland sponsored a Major League Exhibition Game in their home town of Toledo. 1914 was Athletics/Cubs. 1915 was Giants/Tigers.

They brought in major stars of the day like Cobb, Mathewson, Bender, Collins, Tinker, Evers, Chance, etc.... strictly as a "thank you" to their employees and their families! Can you imagine that happening today?

Here is the A's/Cubs Pennant from the 1914 Game...

All these pennants are amazing! I love them. Thanks for posting. I like various vintage stuff and as soon as I saw that pennant (thanks Mark!) I knew I wanted to try to get it.

Didn't bid enough. And I knew it but as someone else felt - this pennant wasn't as graphically interesting to me as other oldies I've seen. I do like the purple version better too.

I thought I'd post my only pennant below. I actually have a few Negro league pennants but don't consider them as interesting.

Great pennants guys. I also love photos of fans in the stands holding the pennants - anyone have any of those to post?

I agree, although I might consider a different waistline approach for Skippy. Perhaps strapping the belt around the waist, instead of the upper stomach would be good ?

Exactly what I thought when I first saw the photo! Here I was thinking that it was something about old age that made guys start wearing their pants like that, but it appears that at least some just do it out of years of habit ;)

Any higher, he would have to unzip his fly to blow his nose.

We used to call it "low riding" in So Cal, but now they call it "sagging".
Thankfully no sagger's allowed in this house...

The comedian Louis CK had a joke about eating his way through to the other side. As he got fatter his gut pushed his pants down and all of a sudden his pants were feeling loose and he felt like he was losing weight while putting it on.
