1936 R312 Pastel Premiums Need Sum Luvin!
 

I just completed my 1936 R312 Pastel Premiums set. About 3 years and way too much money. If you think graded cards take up too much room, you ought to see this pile of plastic. :D:D:D But seriously, these are so thin and brittle that graded is the only way to go, IMHO.

Nice collection. I don't have any of these, but I have always had an appreciation for them. How were they originally issued?

Nice accomplishment! I have but one...a Ruffing! I think they are quite beautiful...it looks like Chas may have a crown or two on those front teeth of his!!!!

Of course that's the difference between Leawood and Overland Park. ;)

I'm not sure how they were issued but since they were premiums I would assume they were acquired thru the mail either by a redemption program or cash.

Not to hijack my own thread, but I looked on Google to find the answer maybe 15 minutes after making the original post, and this thread was already on there. :eek::eek::eek: I didn't realize Google was that fast.

i am working on this set in much lower grades (SGC) and still need 5 more, then several still need to be sent to grade and crossover

Compared to some other sets of the era the R312s seem very modestly priced. They get overlooked many times and can be picked up very reasonably. Neat pics not seen on other cards (though there could be a few copied poses)....

My lone r312...Of course Harder. Despite my focus on HOF Rookies, and/or modern rookies, he's the only player that I actively collect...

Beautiful cards, Ron! My approach on R312 was to go for the ungraded and low grade, so for me this was one of the really economical sets. Funny how perspectives differ --

My approach was to go for graded and high grade. I have been working on my 1933 Goudey set for 8 years now, and about 3 years ago I had reached that point we all do in set collecting where you are making little progress. So you get bored and look for a new set to keep busy. I had always liked the R312s, noticed that there were no high grade registry sets, and thought a 50 card set would be easy.

I had owned some R312s back in the day, and had a bad experience keeping them in plastic sheets. The cards were very thin and brittle, and the corners would seem to break off if you just looked at them. Not to say everyone's experience would be the same, but for me, encapsulated was the way to go. Besides, I am not one of those touchy-feely collectors that loves to handle old paper. And it could just be me, but I think pre-war cards don't smell that great. :eek:

The first year, I completed about a third of the set in Sgc 80 or better. The second year, I realized I would have to lower my standards, and finished another third of the set in SGC 60 or better. This last year, I decided that if I wanted to finish the set I would have to look for cards with good eye appeal at any grade. Of course, I will continue to try upgrading the set because I am a little crazy.

The DiMaggio is costly but the other 49 cards are not that bad. However, if you decide to do this set graded you will probably spend more than the set will ever be worth. So, I do not think our perspectives are really so different. :D:D:D
