Hank Aaron G/U Bat...likely from MVP season??
I'm extremely interested in collecting game used bats...but it's seems the more I learn, the more confused I become. In the upcoming Heritage auction, there is a G/U Hank Aaron bat, believed to be from his MVP season of '57. It received a G/U "8" from PSA/DNA and a "7.5" from MEARS.
http://sports.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleN...lotIdNo=110002 Here's where my confusion lies: Despite all the great signs of game use detailed in the description, this 35" bat only weighs 28 oz. How can that be? Below is great documentation of Aaron's bat orders (published by Troy K.), but couldn't find anything remotely close to that weight ordered at any point in his career. http://www.mearsonline.com/index.php...template=false Just trying to further my knowledge regarding G/U bats, and I know there are many in this forum that can shed some light. Thanks |
His lightest bat that year was 33oz. Though I think a bat weighing in the 20's is pretty light for that time period, keep in mind that all/most bats lose some ounces over time.

Also, here is a thread from about 6 yrs ago about weight loss over time.

I don't care what the experts say, I'm not buying a bat from the 50's that has seemingly lost 5 or more oz.
Just me. Ken |
I went and logged in to the MEARS website and viewed the LOA listing for the bat in question. The specs listed there are 35" and 34 oz. I have no idea where they got it from that this is a 28 oz bat. Probably an error in the listing.

Good catch. I think you're right about the LOO saying 34 oz. You'd think that the consignor would have noticed this already. It's either an error as you say or the bat lost 6 oz. when they sent it to Texas. |
Since it is still in the preview stages I'm pretty sure it is just an error. I haven't seen the PSA LOA, but I can't imagine that a 28 oz Aaron bat would have been given a GU8 grade anyway.
At the very least since the A93 model isn't his pro stock model the bat was ordered for Aaron to use. It's not a team index bat. |
Agree. I'm usually ok with a few ounces lost throughout the years, but 5+ ounces seems a bit much.
Good catch, Tim |
