Your Dream Autograph list
 

I'm sure this has been done, but since I'm thinking about it...

I would like five short one-page signed letters of Cobb, Wagner, Mathewson, Ruth and Johnson, each beginning with "Dear Scott", with instructions on how to perform some baseball skill;e.g-'how to throw a curve', 'how to steal home', etc. Since it's a fantasy, each will be written on team letterhead, written while the player was playing.

Oh yeah, and Babe Ruth's 1927 World Series ring.

How hard is that?

Framed and matted cuts of the first 5 inductees is a lifetime goal... I am already 60% of the way there, (soon to be 80% hopefully) but number 5 is going to be a toughie

Underneath this breathtaking composition are the signatures of the participating members as follows: John M. Ward, T.J. Keefe, J.J Gerhardt, Wm. Ewing, Roger Connor, Daniel Richardson, Michael Welch, Michael Dorgan, Jas. H. O'Rourke.

If we are currently fantasizing, I'm sure I could add some names from the same timeframe, but the list is pretty awe-inspiring as is. What a great item.

Realistically: I would like to acquire a Barney Dreyfuss and/or Hughie Jennings autograph in the next few years.

Long term: Signed Checks from the original 5 inductees

Fantasy: Sam Thompson autograph, Ledger that Bombjack just listed and the hotel ledger from the Halper auction (assuming it wasn't stolen).

My dream autograph would be correspondence between Christy Mathewson and any of his ghost writers with respect to any of the Matty fiction books.

Either that, or a Ten Million autograph signed "10" :)

First would be Barack Obama's autograph repealing Obamacare! (Totally a joke guys dont rip on me!)

Actual list.......

The Ledger from the Halper sale is the greatest signed item in the Sports Memorabilia Hobby, that would be number one.

A James Creighton handwritten letter would be number 2.

The item previously mentioned with Keefe etc. would be number 3.

Next would be a Louis Sockalexis handwritten letter (a few exist in Notre Dame's archives).

last would be a Roy Castleton autograph (he basically does not exist despite his death date.

I'd be interested to see the list in it's entirety (not just he HOFers/stars). Unbelievable piece.

Quick follow up to my question:

A gem with 113 signatures from major leaguers in 1894, Lot No. 14 commanded a final price of $96,000, once the buyer’s premium was tacked on. It was bought by John Brigandi, a veteran hobbyist and dealer more than astute enough to realize what a prize the ledgers represented. It was a nice reminder, if anyone needed one, that the next 2,475 lots or so would be material largely unlike anything ever seen before in the hobby.

Any signed T3 Turkey Red cabinet.

Many of the signatures in that ledger could be exemplars used to spot some of the obvious forged items auctioned recently. I don't want to incur the wrath of any major auction houses by giving specific examples, but we've discussed some of them here recently, especially a couple of baseballs with 1800's HOF'ers that were very questionable. I didn't realize at the time that exemplars were to be had from this hotel ledger.

Dream? to have all 300 HOF'ers (or as close to it as possible. I am not even sure how many guys are still considered impossible)..lol Of course, it would take hitting the lottery and 5-10 years constant searching.....so my list would be 82 long....

Right now I dream to just get to 220 (preferably by way of a comiskey and gc alexander as I'm at 218 and those are the next cheapest)......I'd be satisfied with that considering 200 was a dream last year....

I'd say my autograph dreams have changed over the years, especially as I have less and less space to display them, so I'll have to break it up in to:

Impossible dream: All x number of HOF'ers, all 1919 Blacksox (the whole team), and all 1927 Yankees, and single signed baseballs from everyone on the 1955 Dodgers.

Might be possible: Every signed Mantle magazine that could possibly be signed.

Will be done: All 1934 Cardinals (only need 2), All 1960 Pirates (only need 1...damn you Danny Whelan!!)

Okay, you made me think of another one:

A signed Mantle baseball from every year he played, including minor leagues.

I can also think of a few pre-war card sets that I wouldn't mind having signed by all HOF'ers;e.g-Cracker Jacks, T206, Old Judge....but then I would be getting ludicrous

edited to add: better still - a single 'exemplar' Mantle ball, signed by Mantle each year he played.

FYI, Brigandi does not own the ledger anymore and although I dont know who does, I know others who know where it is now.

Dream: Jackie Robinson and Roberto Clemente's original rookie contracts....

Reality: Grover Alexander letter (any content will suffice)

Rhys, I actually have all of the tough ones, and only need Branch Rickey and Sam Breadon, both of which are fairly easy to get but I've just been distracted with other projects.

I would love to pick up Hal Chase and Thurman Munson signatures on index cards.

I'd also like to wrap up my Perez Steele autograph collection by picking up the following:

Joe Cronin, Hank Greenberg, Red Ruffing, Lloyd Waner, Roy Campanella, Stan Coveleski, Waite Hoyt, Satchel Paige, George Kelly, Early Averill, Walter Alston, Richie Ashburn and Kirby Puckett.

Ugh...on second thought, very unlikely I ever finish that project... :o

Well, thanks to Jim Stinson, Chic Fraser is now gone from the list of vintage no-hit pitchers from my dream want list! :)

Chick (Chic) Fraser threw a no-hitter for the Philadelphia Phillies in 1903. Fraser was a scout for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1934 when this Brooklyn Dodgers banquet menu was signed. The event took place in Long Island just as the 1934 baseball season was just beginning. One off the list, with 18 more to go...

Take a look for yourself. Note that HOF Hack Wilson was also in attendance and signed the banquet program as well.

Too bad Hack didn't have a hangover and miss the event..would've saved you a couple bucks :). Congrats on the pickup!

Thanks Mark! Very true, but it is what it is. When it rains it pours... August has been a terrific month for pickups. It literally made my year for unbelievable finds.

This is the first Chick Fraser that I have seen offered in perhaps a decade. BTW, Jim was nice to me and gave me an offer I couldn't refuse. ;)

Of the players that are impossible/very difficult, the top two on my list would Ed Delahanty and Matty.

As far as athletes that are at least more realistic, I would love to have a Jim Thorpe letter.

Agreed. Gettysburg Eddie would be awesome.
