i saw your post in the list and thought, "that kid has already beaten me to the good stuff?" Thankfully, that wasn't the case. :D

Hope to see you tomorrow. I hope to be there at opening; need to drop some pretty cool stuff off at Heritage.

wazoo 08-15-2013 01:13 PM

Hahaha, not the case indeed. But tomorrow will be an interesting day ;)

I hope to meet you as well. Keep me posted :).

I'll just be there on Friday; it's a long haul for me to make it there from Maryland, but I need to get some items to Heritage and get my upside down back slabbed. Plus, the wife and kids are out of town...

x2drich2000 08-15-2013 01:42 PM

With the way you guys are salivating, I'm glad I won't be looking for any t206s! Hopefully, I'll be able to make it tomorrow and can find something from my wantlist. Good luck to both of you!

Unfortunately seems to be the only things we're hearing about this show...too bad....seems like many dealers missed an opportunity to make some money here.

Not quite.. You're getting a card from me. But I guess you didn't need to go to white plains for that!

x2drich2000 08-16-2013 03:55 PM

Card wise, I came up empty handed as well. Saw very few caramels. The only e92 nadja I saw was a Stone (blue background), probably fair/good with really bad registration...asking price $350. Needless to say, I didn't even consider making an offer. However, I did seriously contemplate an e93 Cobb one dealer had.

atx840 08-16-2013 04:03 PM

There was a dealer at the National with two badly registered Stone's....only two I saw.

wazoo 08-16-2013 04:22 PM

The one card I was going to buy Erick haha. Congrats!

MGHPro 08-16-2013 04:25 PM

Did any dealers have bats or nice baseball trophies?
Thanks
Matt

T206Collector 08-16-2013 04:55 PM

I'll be there tomorrow. I will post my acquisitions, which should include a number of 1933 Goudeys towards my set. I am also dropping off some signed stuff with either JSA or SGC, depending on my mood... :D

Sean1125 08-16-2013 06:32 PM

Did not buy a single card that i didnt have lined up pre-show.... horrible show.... all dealers were 30-40% above retail

wazoo 08-16-2013 06:41 PM

Prices were very high.

You can't leave cards like that at the table or the hound will sniff them out! :D

I tried to pick up a few others raw cards from one or two other dealers, but I won't do more than $20-25 for VG- commons.

Was a good show, nice to meet Waz, Johnny P, Peter, Bill, and a few other very nice Net54 guys. bought a nice carolina brights T206 from Bill B (BBSports), he had probably the best stuff at the show, tons of T206's, rare backs, etc...i had SGC slab some things for me, and i also reconnected with an old dealer friend (John Goodman), great guy, nice T-cards. i used to buy stuff from him in the 90's at the Hofstra show.

Glad i went, was a nice way to spend a day off from work.

wazoo 08-16-2013 09:19 PM

Congrats! Beautiful Carolina Brights :) nice to meet you as well!

WillowGrove 08-17-2013 12:31 AM

Big fish Toby, Bill b, Michael, DJ, John P who doesn't like drama and the kid Hendry, I mean Waz... All great to meet and /or get to know better. Good information was being shared. Really fun.

I feel like I saw enough vintage stuff there to recommend the show. Didnt see any bats or trophies but then again wasn't looking for them.

Saw a lot of interesting Mets and even Yankees stuff too.

Picked up what I believe is a wrapper to M116's, gotta look into it further and a large, framed photo of a dinner honoring NYC baseball scribe Jack Lang, from Jan of 1969. Many interesting attendees including a baby faced Ken Singleton who I doubt played a game in the majors yet.

all in all a great.day.

Peter

Was hoping to go this weekend, but turns out today is moving day! If anyone is up there and sees a ticket from the first game at Shea, please email me. I will pay you a finders fee if we can close a transaction.

brookdodger55 08-17-2013 08:06 AM

I have attended the show for many years throughout the year with some success with memorabilia, The Long Island Show at Hofstra in the fall and the spring have numerous dealers with prewar/ T206's at fair prices. I see many of them at the local hofstra show each month , to mention one who I deal with who has a lot of prewar is Goodman Sportscards, he does the local hofstra show and the two big one's in the fall and spring. Many of the dealers at the Hofstra Show don't set up at the White Plains Show due to time and travel expenses. He does have an ebay store which is a bit higher then his prices at shows. Maybe a trip to the Long Island show in the Fall 2013(possibly cancelled due to Reconstruction of the main Gym) or in April might give to more success. or contacting him directly through ebay, he was at the national and purchased a large collection of Cobb cards, he always has fresh inventory. With my years on Net54, I have very rarely found better deals at card show then I had on this website, quantity and quality at very fair prices. The White Plains show has the same promoter of the Long Island shows. This is no way is an endorsement of any dealers, just providing a good fair quality resource.

White Plains Show

I went to White Plains ( I think calling it the " East Coast National"..is a bit much)
.Im a long time collector .. but only go to a " big show" maybe once a year ( Philly Show, White Plains, Edison NJ,etc.)

Im into lower grade..older stuff 30s40s..but lower grade,

I picked up things here and there... a few 66/67 high#s, a 30s Batter Up or two,..but more times then not I say no to the high dealer prices and pass on stuff I " need"....knowing I can eventually find it on line ..if Im patient enough
I don't know what many dealers are thinking - common stuff like a beat up 65T embossed Aaron or Clemente... the guys said.." Ah..give me 10 bucks "..yea right..I just got one off ebay for 1.99 ! Most dealers don't know how to properly price cards in low grade.. they try to sell a Fair condition 1940 PlayBall star at half the NM price ! clueless..

I always walk out of shows like this thinking... OK yes they did have stuff Ive been searching for...but the price wasn't right

Met some really nice dealers and Net54 folks. Was fun and educational to chat with you folks about the hobby we love.

Came close to closing a deal on 2 SL with Bill B but it didn't work out. Then, 30 minutes before the show closed (Friday), I went back to Bill B to try again armed with more cash, but he was closed for the day :(

My only purchases were a 1972 Topps card and this:

White Plains

It was very nice to talk shop with Willow Grove / Sean B and banter with Bill Brodhead.

I picked up an e126 Ruth, t206 Red Cobb with polar bear, EPDG Dots Miller, 57 Drysdale with auto, Koufax auto, and the french fries at the snack bar are really good.

The show is worth while IMO.

John Goodman. Great dealer. Even nicer guy.

DeafSports 08-17-2013 06:31 PM

anyone see T206 Taylor? let me know :)

T206Collector 08-17-2013 07:12 PM

I picked about a dozen midgrade 33 Goudeys for my set. As mentioned above, the prices were a little high, but I consider it par for the course -- overhead, a day at the show, etc.

I was very pleased with SGC at this show. They authenticated and encapsulated this pair in a couple of hours, and the price was very, very fair.

Solid show, with a solid turnout.

Slip...love the Doyle...very sharp!

206Collector...I really like how SGC puts the deceased date on the label. I'm guessing that is new for them? Do you know when they started that?

Great pickup, guys!

John, Floyd, Henry Lee some of my favorites, it was nice to see so many familiar faces. I went Thursday and will be headed back tomorrow. I picked up a few 1952 topps with really strange coloring. it looks like a double yellow, or like they have been double printed. It was 4 cards skip numbered so thinking it was a weird pack of 5. I've learned if you havent seen something like it before, buy it, and be wrong later! I'm was trying to sell/trade off a few cards, but seems like sticker prices are a bit too high to make it work.

Except Livingston died in 1977, not 1997...

White Plains Show

Picked up an awesome SGC 60/5 1932 US Caramel Babe Ruth for what I thought was a fair price. Thought the pre-war card selection was OK with several dealers offering various Goudey Ruth's and T206 Cobb's, Matty's, Johnson's, etc. Best crowds I've seen at this show for nearly a decade which obviously was linked to the strong autograph guests, such to the point it was extremely difficult walking through the aisles between 12:00 and 2:00 on Saturday.

kinda crowded! I went on Saturday, mostly because I thought Frank Thomas was going to be there and he was a favorite of mine when he was in his prime. Alas, he didn't make it so I ended up getting Robin Yount to sign a '75 Topps for me...

Went back on Sunday mostly to get Bruce Sutter and Pete Rose autographs as well as to get my Banks Rookie and Ruffing Diamond Stars graded by SGC...

Well...just looked at Card Target and it looks like they go somewhere in the $200-300 range. Mine is pretty nicely centered and really only took a hit with SGC because of a surface crease on the top left corner that is only visible from the back of the card. My set is pretty much PSA 7 quality but frankly I'm happy to have this card as part of my set...
