Jackie Robinson
From what I've noticed, it seems a lot of the key Leaf/Bowmans have realized some great prices lately.. especially the '51 Bowman Mays and Mantle (anyone noticed?)... but it is crazy what the Robinsons are bringing.
This exact Robinson sold earlier in the year in an AH at about $2600 (if it weren't so late I'd find the link).. and just got $4500, nice flip for a couple months. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1948-49-Leaf...8#ht_64wt_1285 .. and 5's are consistently getting $2000 plus after hovering around $1000-1200. I remember watching a solid 5 about a year ago, sell for $975. I was on my honeymoon and the shaky internet didn't enter my bid in time. I told myself there would be another sub $1000 deal.. was I ever wrong about that! http://www.ebay.com/itm/1948-Leaf-Ja...ht_4422wt_1285 Curious, have others noticed? and do you think these prices can be sustained? or is this just a post "42" spike that will settle down with time? |
I think the 42 Movie has raised awareness of Jackie and prices have gone up accordingly. Glad I got all mine a while back, here are two of my favorites:

I think they'll nestle back down a little ($2600 for a PSA 5 is kinda crazy), but I wouldn't be surprised if the market has permanently shifted on this card. In other words, I don't think we'll be seeing any '48 Leafs in EX selling for $1000-$1200 ever again. I've also noticed the Bowman Mays/Mantle selling well. True RC's and beautiful cards...I've always thought they were undervalued

I noticed the same thing.
I agree, the movie is probably helping the JRob sales. I collect Bond Bread and haven't see any that I need for sale in over a year. I just picked up a Mantle RC, centered PSA 2 for what I thought was a fair price. I had sold my PSA 5 Mantle RC last year because I didn't like the centering. I paid $1200 for this Mays RC just a few years ago. Most other cards I bought back then have gone down in value. Dan |
Blame the movie (if you're a buyer, praise it if you're selling), same thing happened with early Fantastic Four comics when the first movie was released. Probably lots of others too if you go back and think about it.........

The movie has definitely had a major impact. I know of a bunch of new Robinson collectors that have entered the market. The Bond Bread cards had fallen significantly since their 2011 highs, but have climbed back significantly in the last few months. I believe the most common portrait version hit a record high in one of the more recent Goodwin auctions.
The '49 Leaf card has gone through the roof! Dan, nice Mays. I'm looking into buying a PSA 2 or PSA 3 Mantle RC myself in the coming weeks as well. |
I am usually a focused set builder...but the day after I watched the movie I bought a 1955 Topps and was sucked into the hype. I then of course decided to build a set around it...haha...but the truth is the movie inspired the purchase. So much so I decided I needed a 52, 53, and 56 to go with my 54 & 55...and noticed the prices were going through the roof online! (Bought my 55 at a local shop) I have decided to see if the prices relax a little in a while...but I have not seen any sign of this...
Just my observations... |
Well this is all good news to me. I bought a '52 Topps Robinson SGC 5 dead centered with great eye appeal and paid a few hundred over SMR. But in the last few weeks I cracked and submitted to PSA for my registry set, and it got knocked down to a 4 (a couple of the corners were rather borderline).
So hopefully this upsurge in interest will help me absorb the loss of market value by the loss of a grade point. |
